Default on3 turbo smokes (brand new)

so after finally talking my buddy into buying a on3 turbo kit for his 2001 2500hd he gets it all on there and we got it running last night and the damn turbo seals leak.

can't believe it I talked him into it and told him everyone has been having good luck and it bites me in the ***. we checked the drain back, the oil and drain are perfectly verticle and no luck seems to leak a little sitting and when you spin the turbo it smokes like a train. sucks.

I guess we will call them in the morning and give it one more try.

Are you running a restrictor? How is the drain?

well the line is from on3 so we used it as directed. the drain is nice and straight no kinks but we did find an issue and it seems to help so far. so I don't want to be to fast to blame the turbo just yet the pcv is stuck and not acting like a check valve so it was pushing pressure into the engine and after letting off it whould smoke so we will replace it and look into the breathers and go from there. i'll keep you guys posted.

I've had lots of turbos that leaked a bit of oil and smoked for the first few hundred miles.
I've also had them leak because I didn't use a restrictor and was pushing too much pressure through them.

I'd look at all of the possibilities first, and then give On3 a call.

I'm pretty sure you have to use a restrictor with On3 turbos, which you probably don't have.

It could very well be the pcv system, usually on a boosted car you would run large hose to a catch can or vent it somewhere. The stock pcv stuff wont work very well.. heres some stuff to read

On3 turbos are made in China, a lot of guys have had great luck with them but from what ive seen its either hit or miss. Theres a reason they're only a couple hundred bucks.

the pcv was the cause of the smoke so we are good there but need to get a breather system going and it needs some more tuning.

Is it ok to just run little breathers on the valve covers and no pcv system ? Or no

I run the pcv on my nova no issue but I added a pass side breather . but the issue here was a bad pcv that was pressurizing the engine under boost then when we lifted it whould suck all that air in the intake fast bringing some oil with it. we swapped to a new pcv that will only allow vacuum and all is good.

A huge amount of OEM turbos are also made in China. As are Garrett turbos.
This isn't 10 years ago. They're getting pretty damn good at making a lot of things.
