Cracked 317s Broke a piston, took the heads off found cracks between the valves on 3 cylinders Am I retarded for considering running these? It's clear that there was no combustion leaking from the cracks. The cracks are so small it's hard to see. The only reason I found them is because I've seen it before in 317s so I was looking pretty hard. Someone cosign my bullshit and tell me to run them. Lol |

I would just buy another set. Look on the sale threads here and there are sets for 200.00 317's are cheap. |
Like tax man said 317's come up a lot and for a good price. Or if you don't want that call around to engine builders most builders are good at repairing heads and don't charge much for it. I damaged a set of ls3 heads and had my builder repair them pretty cheap. |
you could have em pressure tested. it's cheap. junk it if it's cracked. |
get yourself a shitty tig and weld em |
its just more time and money. And it seems pretty common for these heads. Ive got 2 sets here that are cracked like that, both coming off good running engines and neither set indicates there being coolant burning or combustion leaking from valve to valve. I might be able to get my hands on some ported 241's for free. Needs a valve job and surface. Sucks, because ,my 317's have a fresh valve job and deck, and they are really clean. Any chance i can weld them and not have to do a valve job and deck? |
you could try, but usually the seats have to come out to weld in between the bowls |
