Default Turbo Caused Exhaust Leak?

Hey everyone, brand new to the forums. Had a question regarding turbo chargers and exhaust gaskets.

Recently, I had a turbo installed on my 2000 z28. It was a kit from on3performance.com. After dyno and custom tune, it pushes 9psi on e85 fuel. After having it back I put about 2500 miles on it before I started hear the leak when under throttle. I took it back to the guy who did the work and he confirmed there was a blown exhaust gasket. I asked him about it since I know he just had to put them in for the turbo kit install and wondered why it would fail so fast. His response was, "this is very common when boosting engines. These exhaust gaskets fail often. Minor maintenance should be expected."

My question is this, do those of you who have boosted your engines had problems with exhaust gaskets? I feel if it's so common others would have the same issues. Or, am I being fed a bunch of bs? Thanks

Not of your using OEM metal gaskets. But just think of the pressure added from a turbo. It will blow aftermarket gaskets away

The GM gaskets are great. I have had mine off several times and they still seal like new.

Exactly which gasket failed ?

They should not fail or leak if correct gaskets are used, and flanges they are used on are all flat. That isnt to say though that over time some parts may warp and that could introduce a leak, which isnt quite the same as a gasket failure.

So you need more detail about the actual problem.

The gaskets that came with my Huron Speed kit failed almost immediately. I replaced them with GM steel ones and haven't had any issues since and my full exhaust is pretty restrictive, to the point I pick up 2 lbs. when the cutout is open lol. Spend the little extra coin and use all the steel gaskets and save yourself some head ache down the road.

I'm using exhaust gaskets called remflex. I had no experience with them until this build. their kinda thick though but seemed to seal extremely well. everyone else here seems to have good luck using gm gaskets. stay away from cheap aftermarket ones and you'll be just fine

I was not informed as to the specifics of the gaskets that were installed with the kit. However, when I took it in with the leak the mechanic said "Even with the metal gaskets that we used they can give". So with that, I am assuming they were some type of metal gasket, but not sure what brand, material specifics, etc. When I pick it up this weekend I ill be sure to ask for brand names/part numbers to make sure I can follow up on this thread and with them if anything else happens.

Speculation is that it is a gasket on the manifold. There was not problems down by the turbo. I say speculation because that is where the majority of sound is coming from. Multiple "gear heads" who happened to take a quick peak had all agreed that it was coming off the motor.

There is zero problem with OEM GM gaskets.

If the flanges are not flat, any gasket will fail eventually...although that is no fault of the gasket.

Flanges must be flat, simple as that.

Just blew out my Remflex gasket on the passenger side at the track last night. Grrrrrrr. I thought the gaskets that came with the Huron speed kit were GM gaskets. They leaked, so I went with Remflex. Going to real GM gaskets now...

Yeah after we pulled off the manifold it turns out the gasket was not stock but one that come with the turbo kit. We put a stock one on and never had a problem since. Just get a stock replacement and you'll be good to fo

Yes, Remflex is a composite gasket. Definitely not for boosted applications from what I can see now.

A further inspection on the driver side shows that another section is starting to thin out as well, probably a small leak right now.
