Default Question regarding Gen IV motor in Gen III vehicle

I'm looking to pick up a junkyard 4.8 for my turbo 2002 Silverado. The truck currently has a Gen III LQ4 that I just hurt a piston on. I've been told that the Gen IV motors are more desirable due to better rods and floating pins.

My question is, is it worth the conversion from Gen III to Gen IV for the better rods and floating pins or will the Gen III 4.8 hold up just as well?

Gen 4 rods started being phased in starting 2004. Any 05-07 Gen 3 4.8 will have the stronger floating rods.

I thought 05-07 was Gen 4?

They overlapped during those years. Gen 4 was being introduced in 05 with the LS2 and LS4 but the gen 3 engines didn't actually stop until the end of 07.

Oh, awesome. That answers my question then. I didn't actually want a Gen 4 truck motor then, because I don't want one with AFM. I didn't realize 05-07 truck motors were still Gen 3. Thanks for the help!

24x reluctor wheel (up to the 07 classic body) were still considered gen3 motors in the trucks. The only "trucks" to get the Gen 4 (ls2 and some 5.3s both alum) in that time were the TBSS and the SSR.

I picked up an 05 motor, LS2. luckily those came 24x so I could still use my genIII sensors and pcm and have GenIV piston/rods
