If 1000rwhp is the goal with no concern for reliability, pick a rod and forged 9:1 piston for your ls1 and go for it. If you want a reliable 1000rwhp, you might consider starting with a block with some sleeve strength. Guys pushing 6.0s sonic check the walls to select a block with the thickest walls knowing that's the weak link. Amazing to know guys are pushing 30-40psi into a SBE 5.3 and sleeves are not splitting. Thicker sleeve iron blocks appear to be the more stable setup. Top it with a 3/4" thick deck head and studs and now you've got a solid setup to rely on with a good tune. Not sure which is the thickest factory head, 317? It with LS9 gaskets are likely a reasonable cheaper alternative.
Maybe folks will share their recipe if you ask the question, "What would you build for the cheapest most reliable 1000rwhp?"

Only good tuners, the right cam, and METHANOL fuel are key to this exception!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong because it's been quite awhile since I raced with Harlan at the Thunder Shootouts. But from what I remember Harlan had problems with core shift and walking the mains in his aluminum engines when he really leaned on them right? How many passes did he get at those power levels? Any OG's remember?

I'm gonna run 8-10 psi on the stock ls1 with valve springs, cam , head studs and new gaskets. I've decided to run the 6.0 this spring in a twin setup. Not worth shattering the ls1 when I can fetch an easy g out of it no problem . If it lets go at 500-550 then so be it but since they tend to last a lifetime at that power level, i would chalk it up to being a dud .

I had a stock ls7 block with forged piston only stock crank and rods with a 91mm turbo made 1180 RWHP at 16 pounds thru a 4L80 E but it didn't last for ever

well Ik it's a bit old , but I kept the ls1 sbe, daily drove the **** out of it at 11 psi /609 rwhp , and sent it numerous times at 17 psi , 802 rwhp . Then pulled the motor and inspected about a month and a half ago.needless to say the motor is still mint . Bearings were all fine, motor never showed any signs of detonation or wear. In fact I'm about to send it out to be line honed , with billet mains / king main and rod bearings, wiseco -11cc slugs, k1 forged rods , and throwing a set of twins on in my newly acquired 2004 gto. If it lasts till fall, I'll be having the mains doweled , the block o ringed , and a partial fill . I met a guy with a sleeved ls1 block prepped identical to the route I'm taking , and he's laying down 1600rwhp on spray on a big cube ls1 block.
