Not a fan of farting around with ECU controlled alternators or wiring in resisted field wires to make them work with aftermarket ECU's. One-wire stuff is easy.

The one you linked is the later 2005 up with a 2 wire outlet. I have one on my truck If you need me to snap you a picture of it and the plug.

The one they are commenting on came in the Tahoe and Suburban around 2003-2004. Its the same alternator but has a different rectifier and has a 4 wire outlet in the rear. typically only 1 or 2 wires are used any way depending on the factory configuration.

Not sure how it would effect what your trying to accomplish since your getting a custom harness and not trying to reuse a factory set up. :cheers:

I can breathe again. lol. I don't like ordering electrical stuff.

Thanks Mike M too!!

I had the same issue when I did my 68...... I was going to buy the 200+$ one wire alternator but did this and it works perfect.... it is very simple.... buy the plug, wire it to a 12v keyed hot and run a heavy wire from the stud on the back of the alt to your shut off switch.... then if you have issues with an alt you can run to the local Napa and get an alternator instead of having a one wire deal.....

Pro Stock John 05-01-2018 05:22 PM

Makes sense. I got a nice new alternator so hopefully this one won't get burnt up. I got a 3" alternator pulley which along with my under drive pulley Capizzi said will charge 14.3 at idle and not get over spun.

what under drive are you using and where did you get the 3" pulley i run the same alt with 10% under drive and it charges 13.6 at idle

I have Summit truck SFI under drive balancer for LS and this is the overdrive alternator pulley I ordered:

Im shocked if its on 24x, thats not a lot of data to tune with at those crank speeds. 58x is one data marker every 6 degrees of crank rotation vs 24x which is one data marker every 15 degrees.

mean piston speed, MPS = 2 * Stroke * RPM / 60 seconds

5.3L MPS @ 8500 RPM = 2 x 3.62 ( 8500/60 )
7.24 x 141.67

MPS = 1025.67" per second

Roughly 85' per second of piston travel divided by both 24, and 58 respectively

24x = 3.6' piston travel per data point
58x = 1.4' piston travel per data point

Maybe worthless info, but I was curious so I posted it up. I know if I was running a Holley system which supports 58x I would definitely want that extra data for the cost of a reluctor swap, especially if the bottom end was being opened up. Although if this is getting done on 24x maybe im wasting time here?

I think your math is a little off. 24x and 58x refer to the number of teeth on the reluctor wheel(obviously), which means that is how many teeth pass by the crank sensor every REVOLUTION, not every SECOND. The amount of piston travel per data point will not change with rpm, it will remain constant. The faster crankshaft turns, the faster the reluctor wheel turns. The math should look like this:

Piston travel per crank revolution - 2 * 3.62" = 7.24"

24x = 7.24/24 = 0.302" piston travel per data point
58x = 7.24/58 = 0.125" piston travel per date point

Thank you. I'm surprised it took so long. I'm always aimed at gains but seldom did my homework and it shows

LOL the quote I like best which I have no idea who coined it is "racers love work, and hate money"

Sounds about right.

regarding the alternator I too use the four pin style. I looked it up I use a 470 ohm resistor spliced into a 12v+ bat feed to excite it.. On my harness its the yellow wire iirc off the four pin plug on the back of the alt used to excite the alternator. The big single threaded rod output goes to +bat. I only use those two wires

Pro Stock John 05-11-2018 11:54 AM

"I hate money" is actually not how I think, I'm the opposite. Everytime I order something over $1,000 it's an ordeal. :)

In process of ordering Holley EFI (everything) and getting the brakes. Might be light at the end of the tunnel.

Bought used hood, front Strange drag brakes, new pin on trunk lid and used Grant steering wheel, and my buddy delivered too.

Phew the hood clears:

i know how that feels...($$$!!!)... i did too a few weeks ago. Got the complete HP LSX drop on kit with pre terminated harnesses and small dash / handheld. (No electronic trans for me so no Dominator).

i went with Holley Dominator fuel pump tough instead of the planned magnafuel 4303. Im not missing much now! Only injectors, TB and driveshaft.

oh, makes me think, what trans are you running btw? I have a strange Shaft out of my 69 Camaro, never ran, Moly, billet 1350 ends best of everything. 48.5” ctr to ctr. Never know. I need longer in the Nova.

Your movin on!!!

M.
