Default Stock F body pan, how much oil is too much?

Normally I run 6qts including the filter

I was at the track the other day, I launch the car and my ms3 shut it down for low oil pressure

I've added another qt and it was fine.

At this point I've got about 7.5 in it. Just wondering if it's too much and at what point do I have to worry about the crank foaming the oil.

I've seen plenty of people run 6.5 or 7 without issue. I usually put 6 in it.

I usually run 6.5 quarts in the FBody pans. This engine I built that's going in soon in has the improved racing baffle setup. I intend on filling the pan on the bench and measuring the oil level to get an idea where its at when the engine is not running and what the crank counterweight clearance is. I do not know how much oil is at the top of the engine though while running....seems like a couple quarts potentially as many run a lot of oil as stated above and assume they don't have significant foaming issues or I would guess some engine failures could be reported as a result. Also depends on what your oil pump setup is. Many have reported the high volume units pump faster than it can drain back and have starved the pan. I always have good luck is a standard Melling 295, I port and polish it and then shim it for an extra 8-10psi. That being said though, I have had loose engines that when the pump was shimmed, the pressure didnt increase as much (the PRV was fully closed basically and the geroter packet volume was not enough to keep up...but did not have an engine failure as pressure was only a little lower than desired.

6 on the street. 7 if racing with intention of hitting 7k+ rpm

8 if drag racing at the track to prevent starvation at the pickup.

fbody pan, baffle, and pickup. Only real oil supply modification is the mellings HP/HV pump.

There are other mods like drilling the lifter holders for drainback and porting the oil pan passages - they are pretty restrictive and in my opinion a lot of room for improvement can be made here. It doesn't take long to do either.

That would be a great How-to video to post. In your free time. Between fuel pump tests.

I run 7. I have pics of 6 to 9 quart fills with the pan off. See here:

I'd be curious to know how much of the oil is up in the engine at lower rpm ranges so at say 8 quarts is the turbo drain covered?

It would be good to see where the oil level is on the stick after a good dyno pull. Wouldn't be surprised to see ~ 2 qts out of the pan.

I agree, there has to be a decent amount up top while the engine is running.

Good info man. Thanks for sharing. I always overfill mine, around 6.5 qts, and wondered how high up the oil is in the pan.

Good mod on the oil pickup also. GM has it too far forward in the pan.
