Default on3 78/75 to borg 80/83 results.

well after running the on3 78/75 on my buddys Camaro 5.3 backhalf 3550 lb Camaro we ran a best of 9.44 at 141 mph with the on3 with open dump pipe.

swapped to a borg 80 mm std cover 83 turbine wheel with 1.25 t4 housing running open 4" dumppipe. with a couple weekends under it the best has been 9.30 at 145 mph running as close to a same tune as possible there is always differences in the weather and da but for a 3550 lb street car the on3 holds its own very well. I believe if a bigger ar housing was available they whould be a good match.

car is 75 Camaro ladder bar car 32by 16.5 quick time pro, 3.73 gear, 400th 3400 freakshow converter, stock 5.3 2005 with isky triple 12 cam 799 heads,ls9 gaskets and studs, truck manifold and t.b. stock manifolds to single 2.5 hotside. launching at 10 to 12 lbs boost getting to 21 lbs in less than a second with both turbos manual controller.

thought you guys might like to know .

Interesting, was the 1/8 pretty close-I figured the 78/75 might have more bottom end, but if you were spooling them up on the line prob didn't matter.
I wonder how the 93 turbine would work

the 78/75 was faster from launch to full boost like about twice as fast but the borg gets there in less than a second so the et really doesn't show it both run mid 1.3 60' times. but the on3 lays over a bit from about 6500 rpm up where the borg keeps going. I bet the .96 housing is hurting flow up that high.

both run 6.0s in the 1/8th at 115 -116 mph.

Interesting. The Borg turbine exducers numbers are not the same spec as other turbos. An "83"exhaust wheel on a Borg is the inducer. The exducer is actually 74 I believe, making the s480 an 80/74 in reality. So apples to apples your roughly only 2 mm bigger on the cold side and 1mm less exhaust with the s480. Let alone any difference in exhaust housing a/r. Interesting results though for sure.

I was looking at the VS billet 78/75 to shave a little cost on my build, always nice to see how that size stacks up.

So an s480 is comparable in size to an on 3 78/75 ?!?

no problem...
but that comes with a *
* if you want fast spool on the street at low revs, you will want the 1.10 A/R ex housing on the 96

the 78/75 is a decent option if room is an issue as they are smaller in size. id say the 78/75 is a closer match to a 475/83 turbine.once the turbine gets bigger like 87,92,96 in the borgs there will get stronger and stronger.

one thing we noticed is the borg iat temps are a good 20*cooler than the on3. but it is also a solid inch bigger valute.

With your stall speed you won't have any problem lighting off a 96mm 1.32 A/R S480 either. The extra cost of the 1.10 A/R isn't worth it. If you have access to EFI live I can show you some logs of a 5.3 spooling a cast S480 96mm at 2900rpm it was at 110 (1psi)kpa, by 3600rpm it was on the wastegate at 210 kpa 15 psi, this was in a 3500# 4th gen camaro with a th400 and Cameron 3200 mechanical diode converter 3.54 ring and pinion and elapsed time on the log was 0.8 sec 16 deg of total timing adv.

I agree, went from a On3 T4 88/84 to a billet S480 T6 96 1.32 and it spooled up faster. Both on a 5.3L absolutely no issue with the Borgs. Not sure what the stigma is with spooling up larger turbos but it seems to be a non issue if the rest of the setup and tune is there. I went to twin 69/73's on the same 5.3 and it spools them up fine as well, would actually go bigger if I were to do it again.

Quick Reply: on3 78/75 to borg 80/83 results.
