Here we go....slow https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...1fbfac2fc3.jpg Donor 4.8 - 400$ https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...a7ff29e843.jpgDonor 2000ish 4l80e- 150$ https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...d11d50e8c2.jpg and the subject at hand. Had this 1999 z28 a4 for about 8 years and finally got the time and settled down to get the on3 76mm project going. It will probably be slow going due to cash restrictions but I feel I've got a decent start .shooting for 550 at the rear. Probably have some odds and ends for sale in the classifieds from my old setup ( 4l60e 3600ss, full tsp true duals) . This is a great site for newbs like me to get into this kinda thing and I am greatful for the knowledge you guys share. But I digress just a fun project and I'll see if I can get the car running before February. Here's what I gotta do to the 4.8. Pac 1218s ls1 oil pan. unsure of which intake to run but I'm leaning toward my ls1 intake. -cam at a later time ( already have jegs 228r dupe.) feel free to chime in. Again this will probably be slow going :bs: |
boost is so much fun. |
Sub'd Got the same build going minus the "subject" good luck! You going to tune it as well? I picked up HP Tuner used and gonna give it a shot. Which injectors and fuel system you thinking about? |

Which injectors and fuel system you thinking about? walbro 450 in tank and 80 lb Siemens deka.https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...c4ad779f76.jpgI know it looks ratty from the bent clip, but that was a pain in the a** to get off! |
tuning my own stuff is pretty much the best part. instant gratification. |
Ok got the deka 80's in the ls1 intake, waiting on some stuff to show up in the mail before I get rolling on the cam and valve spring install. |
I did my cam/spring/trunnion last weekend. Flipped the engine instead of using dowels for lifters Reused pan gasket but cover gasket too far gone. You gonna shim the pump? I went with 3 washer (.140) shim. Also where you gonna plumb the Oil return? I decided on pan not cover. |
+1 On flipping the motor, probably gonna do the melling high pressure, while it's on the stand. Manley pushrods coming [ and length checker] Cbm alignment tools for front and rear cover Making my own spring tool and cylinder pressure filler ( thanks rural king) https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...45045fa644.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...5c4118bd7d.jpg not too sure on gapping the pump, I really hope I don't fry main bearings out romping on it. but I definitely was thinking return on the pan. Just trying to get the motor done up before I start on other stuff |
Ok. So some progress, ended up pulling the heads and doing the Pac 1218s, the deka 80s are in my ls1 intake. Rollmaster timing set is on, looks like a nice piece ! Waiting on my cam degree wheel to come in from jegs so I can get all the timing set perfect. Then the melling high pressure can go on along with the water pump. Annnd the denmah kit with the 7875 from vs is on its way, pictures up soon. Yes my build is going slow. Just wanna get one thing done before i start another |
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...a2fbaa338d.jpgMotor is getting there, spent time learning to degree my cam, which was spot on! And some initial confusion checking my pushrods. Ended up being just fine with the 7.4's. getting ready to figure my oil return drain on the pan in this spot https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...b9616bf719.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...a00c4bee02.jpg |
I would recommend the turbo drain directly above the stock drain plug like in this pic http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/j...pszwai2ul3.jpg |

Well it's March and the car isn't running, oil galley plugs are on backorder from summit, that's the only thing holding me up with the motor. Ordered another walbro 450 , so the plan is have 2 in tank, and a regulator with boost reference, swedgelocked in-line of course! And I'm back in the air about having a/c so I'm looking around for some c6 manifolds. My bumper is notched and we're trying out this corroseal on the body inside the engine bay. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...16929b560a.jpg Lighting sucks |
Stay tuned, oil return got welded on my pan a1, bmr k- member and yank 3600 for the 4l80 on the way. |

Realistically have it running next year. Picked up some decent c6 Corvette wheels for 300 bucks though. Getting going on some needed bodywork/ fixing rust. Pulled my dash, deleting the heat /ac. Got me a plas cutter for doing various things on the project. |
I guess I could call it the " Rustomod" |
Ok rustomod progress... engine bay is somewhat ready for paint in a few weeks after i get a hvlp gun hashed out. After deliberating the cost of buying a exhaust crossover vs building one, i decided to get the huron truck manifold, should be here within a few weeks. Started using corroseal on a bunch of parts and really doesn't work too bad. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...c599b72a86.jpg Heres a lower a arm i used corroseal on pulled the wiring harness out altogether which was a total pita. And engine bay almost has everything out of the way to prep a little and spray https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...0e7fb20e7b.jpg Getting there! and ready for the crossover to arrive and start mocking the engine in the k-member. Thisbhuild has taken me forever and a day and im glad i can finally dedicate some time. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...d425e6f8b5.jpg |

looks good, and hello from near Bowling Green. If you need a dyno Tune I would reccomend Brian Turner and Dynotune Motorsports near Columbus. I am doing a similar build, Gen4 5.3, vs7875 on a huron speed kit. |

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...0cf2432385.jpg Some progress! Getting ready to mock up my radiator before I get my bov set in stone |
Glad to see I'm not the only one taking the "Slow but steady progress" path. We're getting there, inch by inch. I only get to work on mine anywhere from 15 minutes to (rare) 2 hours a day. That includes driving to/from the shop (about 200 yds away). By the time I get the lights on , the propane heater fired up (it's 28 degrees here today) and remember where I left off, it's almost time to go back home. But, like you, it's creeping towards completion. |
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...95f3efe3e5.jpg Some more of my handy work ok so got my radiator ordered, gonna try to trim and run the stock fans , so we'll see how that goes. |
im doing the slow but steady build to . mines because of money lol keep it up . dont lose your motivation . good luck |
Ok more handy work underway, got my tranny cooler mounted and some radiator brackets mocked up. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...3fe74052dc.jpg |
Looks good. I am doing a similar project. I also took the slow and steady route. Between kids and work it took me almost a year to complete. You cant get a whole lot done when you work on it 30 mins at a time. LOL |

Same here. I'm doing good to complete a single 360 degree TIG weld before I get the call to come back home. Still have to complete the drivers side turbo's downpipe past the K-Member, then drivers coils/plugs/wires. One more Wastegate to plumb in. Gotta pull off the front Fascia to get to the intercooler to convert it from 3" in/Out to 3.0" in *and* 2.5" in retaining the single 3.0" out. That's all the big stuff. Afterwards, details like where to place the overflow bottle, routing the intercooler outlet to the TB. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...adc7c43d9e.jpg |
Wow , I'm literally doing everything backwards compared to that picture, but my radiator showed up and I'm getting excited!! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...a3769a2360.jpg |

Woo Hoo! Hope she'll be ready to drive soon. |
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...e2b7d739b8.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...50c9faf562.jpg More handy-work! Got the 80e installed along with converter, these twin walbros sound nasty kicking on! Gives me a lil chubby. The todo list is getting a lot shorter now |
Checked my oil and found coolant in my oil. Coolant blowing out the exhaust also at idle. Now after doing cam, springs, oil pump and timing chain to a motor with a cracked block or head , I can’t tell where the leak is at so far trying to pressurize the radiator. I’ll be in the market for a replacement long block assembly, Really bummed out , wanted my car to be driving this year by now. |
That sucks...sorry to hear man. Good luck getting her together. |
it might jus be a head gasket |
Back from the dead..the 4.8 had the wrong head gaskets. The notched 862’s didn’t seal the mls gasket I previously installed. Myself broken and battered from my wife complaining about my project car that doesn’t run. I continue my quest for melted highway rubber in optimistic stride. Now the here and now : - Id base metal of cylinder head at work - weld notch hot and fast with my tig pedal - waiting to order forged boost-lines and btr rods - have the lower rotating assembly balanced & block hot tanked and punched ( by my engine guy) and reassembly after gapping the rings. - ls9 gaskets - any thoughts or criticisms? - on the second hand I’m contemplating throwing it back together as budget as possible and upgrading the rear end instead of the rotating assembly. I’ll have maybe 300$ having my heads tanked and milled. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...19c21f43c.jpeg |
