Got the rig out last night for some more VE tuning and just general test hits. It's making a steady 158-163kpa (8.5ish psi) and feels nice and strong. Couple areas of improvement: -it's kind of a dog out of the hole until it hits boost which seems to be a function of ignition timing. I'm wondering if I can go back to the stock tables and grab all the timing in the vacuum areas and paste them into my "turbo" tune. Just need to figure out the correlation between g/cyl and kPa and where the crossover occurs. -The brakes are fine for coming down from speed but they don't do a great job of holding the truck while I brake torque it to bring the converter up on the stall. Pedal basically falls to the floor and the truck pushes through the brakes, I'm wondering if it's a bad booster or MC. I may just say screw it and wire in the sloppy trans brake 3rd gear trick instead of messing with brakes on this old rusty POS |
I'll have to look when I get home. It's pretty much the same timing table across all of the dontbsme style tunes, colorado, potucek, etc. EDIT: I should just post my log and tune, lol. |

3 Attachment(s) Tune and Log attached from a couple nights ago. I also attached the next iteration that I haven't tried yet; on this one I altered the timing tables to read same as stock up to about .5g/cyl airmass since that's where it seemed to changeover into boost, roughly. |
Sloppy boost controller installed (30psi amazon regulator) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/ls1tech...46b7e1e412.jpg |
2 Attachment(s) Now that I have most of the mechanical bugs worked out I took it out tonight for some hits in Mexico. It seems to take forever to spool up and doesn't actually make peak boost until 4800. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it blowing through the stock muffler..... |

Somebody been painting stripes on the road, lol. I have been looking for a newer stepside in the early 2000's, just don't see them offend. There was a black one, ext. cab., really liked how it looked, but guy wouldn't part with it. Shame, it just sits with a couple flat tires. |
You rarely see Stepsides where I am, let alone a 2WD model up north in WNY! This one is rusty but perfect for a sloppy project |

3 Attachment(s) I changed around a bunch of additional stuff, mostly making PE enable more aggressive and adding in some timing .68 g/cyl and under in the diagonal "belt" of where it runs under WOT from 1200 rpm to boost. Marginal improvement but headed in the right direction. For fun I also experimented with making a "sloppier" trans brake...essentially using VCM scanner to lock the trans in 3rd while footbraking and mashing the gas. It built right around 4psi of boost stalling at 3,000 rpm and 20 degrees of timing. I wonder if adding a couple degrees will help it get up on boost more as it didn't want to go any higher. Letting it kick back into 1st and releasing the brake made for either a hell of a holeshot or boatloads of wheel spin. |
1 Attachment(s) Took this pig out to the local 1/8 mile last night for some shakedown passes now that the sloppy transbrake is all wired up. 1st pass: put the gear selector in 1st, quick burnout. Roll up, stage, leave the sloppy brake OFF just to see what it does on its own. Total dog out of the hole, come up on boost in 1st and spin, all of a sudden truck stops accelerating. I realize I left the shifter in 1st. D’oh. Click into Drive and let it go, run a 10.4x @ 72 mph. Wasted pass. 2nd pass: leave the selector in 2nd, quick burnout to clean off the tires. Sloppy brake still off, this time I leave it in Drive and do a slight brake torque to bring up the converter to 2000rpm. Some spinning as it shifted into 2nd, ran a 9.5x @ 78 mph. 3rd pass: Sloppy brake time. Mash brake, mash gas, watch boost slowly come up to 3 psi. Getting the timing right is tricky as I let off the brake button and foot brake, then try to pedal through 1st as it wants to spin. Best pass of the night, 9.2741 @ 82.26. Awful 2.4381 60’. Picked up a lot of mph by getting out of the hole faster. Attachment 714885 I need more traction and I need more boost/rpm off the line. The rest seems to be working well! The highlight of the evening was some 19 year old in a new Sierra Denali Crew Cab pickup with all sorts of exhaust work telling me he wanted to race, winner pays for the pass ($5, local pay as you go cruise night). He got me bad off the line (need more boost!) but I reeled him in hard. He had his 4 way flashers running halfway down track thinking he had stomped me, but I had about a car on him by the time we finished. He was speechless when we pulled over to chat….good times. |
3 Attachment(s) Local pick and pull had an "all you can carry" day for $50, even got a free t-shirt! I picked up some 2 16” 2000 Crown Vic wheels for spare burners/street tires, and a pair of 97 Crown Vic wheels in a 15x7 size for race use. I am trying to find a 15” drag radial that will work on a 7” rim, wondering how wide I can go….hoping I don’t have to buy new 15”x10 wheels, but oh well. I didn't see if you kept the Hooker outside but someone told me that you loose some accessories on the trucks with that setup. I can't remember if it was AC or power steering but I was considering it at one point and ditched that idea almost immediately because I live in the south and I'm not giving up AC and I'm building my RCSB for my daughter and I don't think she'd like arm strong steering. |
The PS is on the driver's side and unaffected. The AC is (was) on the pass side and gets ditched to make room for the hooker manifold. I sold the truck this past week. Had fun with it all summer and will fondly remember the burnouts it could do. Mostly built it just to prove that I could DIY everything start to finish - fabrication, tuning, etc. The new owner knows about the build thread here, hopefully he posts up about it. |
