Dedicated turbo headers to make my FI S485 work well?

Hi guys, I am in the process of swapping everything out of my 4wd RCSB Silverado to my 4wd RCSB Canyon, (370LS engine)I will shave around 1500lbs of weight.. while I am there I will be switching from my precision 76/75 to a FI S485/92 T4 1.10.. adding TFS 220 as cast and better Tq converter while I am there (from Yank PY3400 to Circle D 252mm 3800).
the main thing here is, I was told by a reputable Head Porter who knows air induction that in order to make this new turbo work at its full potential I needed to have a set of "dedicated turbo headers"..
I wanted to ask you guys if that sounds about right or what are you guys running your S400's with?
I am aiming for 1000-1100 rwhp..
Thanks and any idea, picture or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Stock manifolds with a 2.25 inch crossover

kbracing96 07-18-2018 10:20 AM

What do you have now? I've had many guys make north of 1K hp with my log manifolds.

Stock manifolds here too. For your goals you will be plenty fine with them. Although turbo headers do look way cooler!

Stock manifold 2.25 crossover into a KB style log will do plenty.

I do have a hard time seeing 1500 pounds difference between the 2 trucks? I know those Colorados are pretty heavy girls

RCSBTURBO4WD 07-18-2018 11:58 PM

I am keeping only the exterior sheets of metal from the truck, tubbed chassis, no interior, 4 link, I will remove the whole front suspension and move the LS engine 6" backwards

Nothing against a nicely ported head, but any untouched factory head will hit those numbers with enough boost on an untouched factory manifold to boot.

Improving head flow and manifold flow will just get you there with less boost. So it depends on budget and aesthetics in the end. Properly setup merge/collector manifold will def. be capable of better flow, but it’s not “needed” and is certainly a large expense.

Personally I’d save my money on stock block/crank builds. Those are the 2 major weak points, not the manifolds. And you can’t really upgrade one without the other. Also wouldn’t bother dumping money into porting a stock head (if that’s what you are doing). They have a relatively thin deck and the money would be better spent towards an aftermarket head.

Factory long block with decent valve springs and a big turbo will hit 1000whp semi-easily. Pushing much past that you shouldn’t be on a stock block anyway, esp. at semi heavy race weights.

That makes sense, may even lose more than you think. Should be an awesome vehicle tho

To make anything work to its full potential requires that you do every possible stupidly expensive and time consuming thing in the universe to optimize it. This means that technically the guy is not lying to you. In the real world he can shove his dedicated turbo headers up his ass.

Classic shop scope creep, seen it over and over.. There is Lower hanging fruit for more gain..
Last set of custom tubes I had done,, were > 3000 bucks Work of art, all Tig welded with iconel rod.
Just the pretty factor had to have added 10 MPH...

I am in Sonora Mexico and as you know labor in this side of the border is probably half the price or less.. he quoted me around $800-1000 dlls for both headers and exhaust custom build.. let me get on his website and get some of the pictures of his work.. badass in my opinion.. let me know what you think after you see his job..

While I won’t dismiss this guy’s skills, a lot of us fall into the “while we’re in there” trap.

As as others have said, just say no...

best set of success with your build. Sounds like it’ll be really cool.

spark plug changes suck with most headers. Easy as pie with stock manifolds. Wanna guess what i run?
