it has nothing to do with it being a race car. A lot of people answer from the pocket.. it all has to do with HOW MUCH MONEY YOU WANT TO SPEND LOL. sure a 388 with X turbo will work.. but a larger motor and a larger Efficient turbo will always make more power. The reason people decrease cubic inch is because, you're able to stretch the turbo efficiency farther with less cubic inch. depending on what class you race, there is a stipulation on cubic inch, like x275 racing for instance. for a street car I usually opt for more cubic inch, as it makes the car a lot more fun to drive on the street. Technically speaking, if you go with more cubic inch, you need to match the turbo to suit, or you'll be "Choking" the engine once you really start throwing the coals at it.

As Ron says, for a street car, maybe heavy car etc etc....the better torque, potential spool and such things that a larger engine can give might be more desirable.
But a larger engine will typically have thinner bore walls, potentially weaker for high power levels. But it depends what base you're working from and how far you're really going to push

I have a 388ci with a borg s400 chassis 88mm. My car traps 181 in the 1/4 really easily. Its been 206 in the half mile. I couldnt be happier with the combo. Its not winning and classes but I can drive it from state to state and with just a gear change itll run 7.7 1/4 or 200+ half mile without breaking a sweat.
At the moment the car is limited to my local tracks prep and suspension knowledge. I havent been able to break the 5.0 1/8 barrier in the past 3-4 track sessions. After I get a handle on wheelies or spinning. I have no doubt in my mind once I get some more testing in and a little more boost at it and see 4.7/4.8's at 150. I think thats pretty fast for a pump e85 car with power windows and a radio still.
I dont think you should give up on the combo. Just refine it.

As far as the cage goes I have gone from 10.0 I did back in 1996 to the 8.50 I upgraded to in 2016 and now being held back from full potential by cage limits. It is expensive to keep upgrading a cage and after I hit 7.49 the rules change again and I would have to cut EVERYTHING out and start over with Moly. If I had to do it all over I would have just spent the money and gone Moly 25.3 and been done.
