Default V band gasket

hello fellas. I have some interesting info for you. So I’ve been chasing my tail on my turbo system. Runs good. Works good but I couldn’t get over 6 psi. I always thought I could hear an exhaust leak. I thought it was the rear cylinder on my turbo manifold. Well I got under the car Friday night and low and behold, my v band wasn’t on all the way and it was bent up. Took the v band off. Noticed the flange is slightly not so flat either. I really don’t feel like taking this all apart again so I thought I’d try a v band gasket. Sounds easy? Well finding a 2.5 and 3” isn’t so hard but a 2.25 is extremely hard to find. I found one for like $55 shipped and it was from Australia or something. Yea, umm no. Way too much money especially if I take it off and have to replace it. Then I say a seller on eback that makes copper gaskets. Reading the description he says he can custom make. So I messaged him. I now have a custom 2.25 v band gasket being made for me. For a whopping $8 shipped. The gaskets are actually only $5 each. I have a v band with a step so it’s actually a tad bigger than 2.25. Has anyone tried something like this? It’s .030 thick and he can make it as thin or thick as I want. He wanted to know if he should offer that size but I told him wait till I test mine out.

if it works, it works! we have made some gaskets from various stuff for uncooperative hot side flanges.

i can tell you that the copper permatex rtv works for about 1 WOT blast haha

yea I didn’t want to waste my time with copper sealant. I like a more elegant and permanent solution

the graph-foil stuff I use currently has treated me better than copper or stamped stainless.

ebay search for

99.5% Graphite Flexible Foil Gasket Sheet, Thickness 0.3,0.4,0.5,0.8,1mm

i use the 1mm stuff in 300x300 sheet. plenty enough to do every vband on a hotside.

cometic will make you custom gaskets also. I wonder if I should just get some graphite gaskets. I’m sure they will seal better than copper. I wonder if this guy could cut them out of the graphite material. I may message him. I could always do it by hand tho.

i ordered some anyways. Could always use some.

experiment around and see what works for you. the graphite gaskets seal good but they're pretty much one and done...

I run 3" SS vband gaskets bc they are reusable. But Ive also gotten remflex 3" flange exhaust gaskets and just tin snipped the ears off and you have a 3" vband gasket that will seal any warped flange ever and be good for 2000*F lol. I would look to see if they have them for 2.25". Can you PM the link to the ebay seller? I think ive asked him before as well but can't find him. I'm stepping down to 2.25" now on my crossover so looking for possible gasket solutions.

he sent me instructions on how to anneal the gasket yesterday. When I get it I’ll let you know how it works. If it does not seal good enough I’ll see if he can cut them out of graphite material.

I used copper sheet and annealed the cutout to make manifold to up-pipe gaskets. You can get the copper sheet from amazon or even a local sheet metal shop. Once you cut it out, use a MAP gas torch and get it cherry red and then let it cool and it'll be nice and soft. Once you compress it, it work hardens back up.

i already annealed it. I heated it red hot and dropped it evenly in water. It’s way softer now. Neat.

the stuff I got from Phil Griffith, when ATR was is business….25 yrs ago. It works.
The problem w/ thick gaskets is, the v-band clamp contact is pooched.

Update. Got the gasket installed and new v band clamp today. Fit perfectly, the gasket wasn’t too thick to cause and issuers and now my leak is definitely fixed. The car sounds so much quieter, didn’t realize how much I was hearing the leak because it wasn’t ticking like a header gasket.

Another thing you can do is lube up the clamp, threads and the v section, helps make
a tighter clamp-cool that there are gasket solutions, welding sometimes does cause
distortion (esp with my welding, lol)

I always warp my V Bands when welding. Light Belt sanding works okay afterwards. I've always wondered about V Bands and gaskets. Never heard of anyone doing them before and thought about doing the exact thing you guys are doing! It's great to hear it's working.
I ended up grinding down and welding my V Bands together on the up pipes to eliminate leaks. But this is great to know for the turbine housings. I now use 3 bolt flanges for my exhaust as they come with nice gaskets and are just better!
Thanks for sharing!
