I've hit the limits of my 3 450s. Going cable, looking for gas tank advice

There may be a better place to post this but I figure this is where the most cable drive fuel pump cars are. I think I'm making the switch to cable driven fuel pump and I was wondering if anyone has sumped there f body tank to feed the pump. Or put a bulkhead in or something?

MagnaFuel ProTuner 750 Series In-Line Fuel Pumps MP-4303

This will get you the fuel you need.

lmt0705 11-22-2018 12:25 PM

I would have to run 2 of them

I was looking at some of the belt driven pumps on the english/ETS cars and they were all custom fuel cells

Have you thought about using the new Aeromotive brushless 5gpm electric pump? They claim 2600fwhp on gas. That means approx 1820fwhp/1700ish rwhp on e85. https://www.aeromotiveinc.com/brushless/

lmt0705 11-23-2018 02:14 PM

I looked into it, at 70psi it drops off a ton and would only flow a few percent more then my current setup

Never did figure why with all of the Camaro's (1998-2002) that modify the stock fuel system why an aftermarket company that mfg tens of thousands of stamped metal gas tanks didn't modify the 1998 metal tank with a provision so the bottom half of the tank is sumped and still fit the 1999-2002 model years. Sure would be cheaper than custom built aluminum tanks and $1200 + dual in tank systems.

You can install a sump kit on a 98 steel tank, install one of those diesel sump kits (Can’t remember who, but someone on here has done it.)
Or get a Nate’s /behind bars tank, (best way to do it )

Get in touch with bob at AEI for the drive set up.

There’s this too if he still has it.

What was the limit of 3 450s?

This kit looks well made and designed and not too expensive - steel or non-steel tank. Even dual outlets. Wonder if enough room to install in the baffled section of the 98 steel tank? No need to weld either.

A better question is how much money is an engine worth that requires 3 450s worth of fuel. Then realize that you have at minimum triple the possible points of failure in your fuel system. The reality is exponentially higher potential for failure.

It's fine to just say you don't know personally. If you do, post up the results. I understand what you're saying, but a ton of people have used multiple staged pumps for a very long time without issue. A large single pump can fail just as easily as anything else with the same result so although I understand what you're saying, I do not really agree. Everything takes maintenance and keeping a close eye on.

You're right, most people won't have issues.

To be fair, the large single pump failing is a lot safer than one of the three Walbro's failing.
Cutting off the whole fuel system is better for the motor than part of it.

Also curious as to the max of the triple 450s. I have multiple fuel fail safes in place if there is a drop in fuel pressure so I'm not too concerned with argument.

transam69230 11-27-2018 07:58 AM

My plastic tank has a -12 bulkhead fitting in it going to an aeromotive 11182 pump that comes on with boost, and dual in-tank DW400s that run the majority of the time. I am making 1550rwhp currently without issues. I don't have room for a cable drive setup the way my turbo kit is laid out.

Holley is setup with fuel pressure safeties so even if a pump fails its going to start to shut the boost down/car so nothing gets hurt.

The limit of three 450s is usually 1200-1300rwhp depending on the base pressure.

….and boost pressure and the type of fuel you're running and how well they are wired.

There are a few guys making ~1800 flywheel horsepower on triples.
Most guys topping them out at 1200 typically have fueling issues. Pressure sensors in the merge fittings for 3 pumps often show pressures of ~90 PSI, meaning the flow from the 3 pumps is greatly reduced.
Evidence should be abundantly clear when some are making 700-750 on a single pump, but are running out on 3 pumps at 1200.

mshadow 11-27-2018 12:07 PM

You're not going to find a streetable single pump option unless you do cable driven.

Or just go the route of the 5 gpm brushless and sump your tank run that in boost and run a single or dual intake walbro 525.

lmt0705 11-27-2018 06:42 PM

I was good till 28psi, I made 1462 to the tire at 25psi so 28 was probably low 1500s. After that pressure starts dropping off every pass. The Holley does compensate and I've even had a pump burn out before and the cl comp saved my motor. I'm on borrowed time before I ruin a very nice motor over not having an adequate fuel supply
