Forced Induction or New car

I’ve been building a 01 Trans Am and trying to see if it’s worth continuing to building it or saving the money and getting a C7 Zo6. The TA has a built LQ9 with forged internals and 799 heads. A built 4L60e which is going to be swapped out for a 4L80e. Ford 9 inch with 35 spine and 3:40 gears. It has the a torquer maxx stage 3 cam and full exhaust. If I can continue to build it, the route I’m going is procharger and meth. Just don’t know if it’s worth putting the extra money into it if I could be putting it on a corvette.

Depends what you are looking to do with it. Procharged, the T/A will run circles around a C7Z. But if you want something that can go around turns, then the C7 would be the way to go.

Get the C7 hands down better platform

gbtwo 03-14-2019 12:02 PM

This is even a debate really... C7 Z06

Get a C6Z that already has FI for cheaper then the C7Z, win win and a lighter car! Seen plenty of fast C6Z's sell for about $40k, heck most heads/cam C6Z's run with a C7Z for $30k. Not sure what your goals are with the C7Z? Personally the stock blower on the C7Z doesn't do anything for me, so I had to factor that into the price of upgrading it immediately so I decided C6 was better fit for me as it checked all the boxes.

They are different animals but I'd prefer the C7 even if not a Z06 if driving a decent amount of miles a year. I don't have one mostly because I refuse to give insurance companies more than I do already. My Formula also fulfills me need to always be messing with something.

I've even considered selling a couple of mine and getting an ATS-V so I understand.

You won't spend entirely insane hours doing this kind of stuff with the new one though, that can be considered a plus or a minus.

C7Z....I have two friends with them. They are nice a quite and smooth and fast. My c5z slaps choke holds on them in a race, but other than that.....no competition.

gnx7 03-14-2019 05:45 PM

How fast do you want to go? :)

$45K with freshly rebuilt LS9 (MAST LS3 heads/BTR Stg3 turbo cam), rebuilt Precision 88mm turbo, cleaned/flowed ID160# injectors, new T56 Magnum (or powerglide if you choose), Holley Dominator EFI, boost by gear/time, traction control, 8.8" with 33 spline axles/Wavetrac, 2900lbs wet. Should run an easy 8 second pass and fully streetable.

If I get a C7, I’ll be building it also. Probably the same with the procharger. I’ve been thinking about a C6 also just like the body style of the C7 a little better. A C6 with the LS3 won’t be a bad build.

I’m not worried about going around turns. I go to the track in run sometimes but we drive a lot on the street. My wife and I might even take a 2 hour drive and the car. I want to be able to run 9s and still drive the car with no problems.

Yeah I know what you mean it’s always something you got to do next with the T/A. It’s fun and stressful at the same time. I’m to the point now I want something where I can get in and don’t have to think about it twice. Gear box doesn’t look bad at all by the way. What kind of set up you running?

I’m kinda in the same boat. I got a friend with a hellcat, another with a 14 Roush, and another with a 2012 5.0 but is making roughly 650 at the tire. So I got a couple guys that I got to keep up with. But on the other end I got a brother and cousin and we all got T/As. They’re running nitrous so right now I’m odd ball out. That’s why I’m trying to come up with this plan to sneak up on them

Converting my T56 and F1C setup to a pretty much over killed Precision 76/75 CEA Billet / 4L80 conversion.

G1Pro Garrett Cored Intercooler, ID1000s, Dougherty Turbo Cam, AMS 500 2-Stage Boost Controller, Huron T4 AC V3 Kit with a QTP Oval Dump off the down pipe, AEM AQ1, Jakes D1, Circle D 258 Triple, Alky Control, and a bunch of other stuff.

Nice!! Sounds like it’s going to be a strong set up

As much as I hate to say it, I would go with the zo6 higher resale and overall a lot more fun to drive.

And you’re talking the C7 or C6 right?

I can agree with you on that. I want something that’s mainly a street car but will see a little track time.

I LOVE F-bodies, but they can't compete with the comfort and tech of a new C7 ZO6.

i agree. That’s what make the decision so tough. I’m to the point I’ll be happy with a c6 also. That piece of mind is also big in this.
