what is a rotabroach bit?
 

anyone got a pic. Im ready to tap the oil pan on my install. Can I get 1 from autozone? TIA

Whoa, why are you using a rotabroach (AKA spot weld cutter) to tap your oil pan??? Seems like you're looking at the wrong tool or something. Or are you looking to clean up the flat surface on the pan?

Im just going by what vortech called it in the directions. I dont have one of those bits. can I just drill a 9/16 hole and then use a 3/8 NPT tap? thanks for the help

Can you post the instructions? I'm guessing that they want you to use a rotobroach to machine a flat spot in the pan so that the fitting can seal flush. So you'd need to drill a small hole to use a rotobroach to machine the flat into the pan. Then open the hole up with a 9/16 drill then tap it. That's why it would be good to see the instructions to say for sure.

That makes sense. They want to use a rotobroach only because it will leave a cleaner and straighter hole in the pan. It also won't elongate a hole as easy as a drill can. You could also under drill with a 17/64, ream out to 9/16 and then tap it. They just want a clean straight hole to tap it. I'd be more careful in putting the tap in straight!

i have used a hole saw and a wood boring bit before.. both have worked fine. the wood boring bit was nice cuz was only $2.

My Vortech kit supplied the drill bit and rotabroach. Look around it is there if you bought the kit new if it is used maybe you could call the original owner and see if he has it. It is not a tool that you need everyday for sure. I did what Tapout said before I found it in another box a few hours later etc...

The 9/16" rotabroach cuts through the oil pan like butter. Vortech uses it because it cuts a much better hole than a drill bit and sends the chips out rearwards real nice to keep them out of the pan.
