OBX FMIC's

I was warned against using one of these inexpensive intercoolers and told to run nothing less than Spearco. Anyone using them please speak up and attest to their quality (or lack thereof).

Do a search.

BIGBOS Sep 29, 2004 11:41 PM

Who told you about the quality, are people having problems?

trtturbo Sep 29, 2004 11:43 PM

Alot of people have been putting them on and so far I dont recall anything negative.

F8L Z71 Sep 29, 2004 11:47 PM

No problems with any of them that I know of yet. Mine works great...

OBX makes some decent stuff and they make some crappy stuff. This one seems great. Since they dont actually make the product it's hit and miss....

Mine is working awesome for the price. :)

Like you said F8L, they make some crappy stuff which is what I heard. It's hard to believe that a 275 dollar intercooler thats the same size as a 500 dollar intercooler can be as good... Although, I tend to be one of the ones that says you are paying half for the product, half for the name so who knows. Thanks for your input guys.

Believe it. I have one and it's of very good quality.

Same here.... i have one and its of awsome quality.........Its does its job way better then the crappy IC that ATI sells with there kit..... The inlet side of mine is HOT and the outlet side is just above ombient.... so for my money i couldnt have bought a better unti...... Im only shooting for 650rwhp, so for my goals it what i needed..... Im happy with it.

My OBX just arrived at home but I am out of town until Saturday. Its killing me! I want to see it and get the install started! Ahhh! :bang:

Pro Stock John Sep 30, 2004 01:29 PM

Maybe if folks posted up before/after IAT results.

How many cores does the OBIX use?

Nice idea...anyone?

Maybe if folks posted up before/after IAT results.

Many of us have already John.
But since many guys can't seem to believe there really are good Hi-Po parts at low prices out there, I'll post mine again.

Peak IAT compare at 10-11 psi boost on 70' day-
No intercooler = 190'
No intercooler plus 15GPH methanol= 170'
My DIY water/air= 135'
OBX= 90'

Cruise IAT compare-
no intercooler= 130'-160'
no intercooler plus methanol=130-160'
My DIY water/air= 5' over ambient
OBX = 3' over ambient

It is a Bar and plate intercooler which is regarded by many as superior to tube and fin types. It doesn't have "cores". The core on this unit is 3" thick.

Your FMIC only went to 90F in a full quarter mile blast?

S_J_H Sep 30, 2004 06:18 PM

Not quite a full blast John. Just to 115mph and the car will probably trap around 130ish. At least it better since it was trapping 126 with a lot less in it and only 2.73 gears. So IAT would probably rise a bit more by the 1/4 mile mark. But so would ALL the other comparisons I listed. The 190' no intercooler IAT was only to 105mph.
Bottom line IMO, it is a very nice intercooler at a great price for the middle of the road power level guys like me.

Unless it rains I'll get some results this weekend. Initially I can say the IAT's are dramatically lower but it looks like I may have lost some boost (1-2#s, not good). It may be due to the way longer run that the air goes through. Nothings for certain right now because I've only had it from 0-80 so far. The track will tell no lies.

Keep in mind the lower IAT alone is going to show up as less boost on the guage.
example-100' F drop in IAT would show as about ~3psi loss if mass flow is kept the same (blower speed).

I didn't know that. I saw that some of the ATI guys gained boost (maybe their intercoolers were really restrictive). I also thought I read that you lost a # too. Its weird what has happened to the tune. I had to pull fuel out of the PE vs RPM mode because it was running so much richer. I'm also getting more KR. Before I had zero knock with the alky & 21 degrees. I'm picking up KR now so I'm going to have to back the timing down. Before I do that though I'm going to put 100 octane in and go to the track Sat..

frcefed98 Sep 30, 2004 07:36 PM

I gained boost, but I attribute that to the larger core PLUS 3inch IC tubing(which btw is a ton shorter and more direct then the ATI mess) and 3.5 right before the MAF. I already posted my findings with this FMIC. I posted my IAT's and I trapped 117-118 before FMIC and 124 after with the only changes being the FMIC and piping. I went from ~12psi to 15.5psi with the FMIC/big tubing install.

*disclaimer, I could be wrong but...*
I don't really see how you can screw up an intercooler, they are pretty basic, no moving parts, no electrical things to fuck up....I mean its just a CORE with tanks welded on. If the core is a good free flowing bar and plate like this one, and the endtanks are of decent quality (this one has cast aluminum with no sharp transitions internally...so pretty good in my book), and the welds are spot on excellent, which these welds are, then the IC will be good. I don't really see where the problem is.
OBX doesn't make them, they are made for them and labeled OBX. So that is something to consider. I'm tired of paying outrageous prices for things. This FMIC is working awesome for the money spent. I don't forsee a tank falling off or cracking off somehow, and it is mounted very securely so I don't have to worry about the core be tweaked....so really whats the worry about using one of these? What else could go wrong, core some how disinegrates into srapnel madness?
Specs said it would flow enough air for 700-800hp, That is plenty for me and my set up.

F8L Z71 Sep 30, 2004 09:34 PM

I posted a huge long thread about my results on it about a month ago. ;)

IATs:
Cruising without FMIC = 115-120deg
5psi without FMIC = 150deg
10psi without FMIC = 190deg (75ish deg ambient)
13psi without FMIC = 240deg (75ish deg ambient)

Cruising = couple deg above ambient if I rememeber correctly
5psi with FMIC = 80deg (70deg ambient)
13psi with FMIC = 107deg (68deg ambient)

The tests with the FMIC were done hot lapping it on a back street area and doing full on 1-3rd gear runs up to 100mph.

lcvette Sep 30, 2004 09:52 PM

can anyone tell me the exact specs on this OBX unit, and where to get one? and if anyone is using one and hitting near the 650-700 rwhp mark, how is it working out? thanks in advance!

Chris
