turbo's are better for... mite kind so of stuped but... do turbo's give you a much higher top end speed? and y? or are they much better for 1/4 mile times and 0-60s? |
Both. You will have a higher top speed because more power will allow you to pull harder in top gear, and acceleration will be improved from the huge power spike you get when the boost hits. |
To me it seems that huge turbo cars are better at top end runs, where N/A and nitrous cars make better 1/4 runs for the power they make The best example are Supras. 1,000 HP and running 12s, but one of those things on the interstate...yikes That's just me though, I only say this because I know of a few guys with ~450 n/a rwhp/rwtq running 10s, then you see the guys with gobs and gobs of power (600-700+ at the wheels) running the same times. True, a lot is due to their suspension setup, but still...not trying to start a war here :) |

[QUOTE=Strahley]To me it seems that huge turbo cars are better at top end runs, where N/A and nitrous cars make better 1/4 runs for the power they make The best example are Supras. 1,000 HP and running 12s, but one of those things on the interstate...yikes QUOTE] Actually that's the worst example. 1000 hp 12 second cars are probably not set up for drag racing and the drivers are probably not "serious" drag racers. It's all about the setup. Look at the supras set up for drag racing they are some of the quickest drag radial cars. Any car including NA and nitrous will the run "wrong" times if set up incorrectly. Often it seems that people fail to mention the 8 second 160 +mph supras that ARE setup for drag racing, and the turbo cars that dominate the majority of classes they are allowed in. Take a big cube nitrous or N/A car and put a road racing set up and the wrong converter and gear in it, and the correlation of Et to mph will be just like some of the supras cars that people commonly bring up in a discussion like this. A 500rwhp nitrous or NA car that spins to 6800 with a 2.73 gear and a 2800 converter will have what many consider "Supra" et's compared to the mph also. Why? The setup , combo (whatevet you wanna call it.) Usually nitrous cars are more biased torwards drag racing ,and thus set up that way. Plus ,even though all cars need to be set up properly to run the "right" times, this seems to be even MORE critical with turbo cars. But when done correctly , the results speak for themselves. Also when comparing cars "for the power they make" you have to compare a car for the WEIGHT THEY CARRY. Many people get turbos for "sick street car power". Many of the nitrous and NA guy start ripping out seats ,carpet etc, while many of the turbo cars are 3600 plus daily drivers, compared to about a 3000lb drag car . That also gets back to the setup also, and not just weight . You can't really find which one is best for drag racing when comparing a 550rwhp, 3600lb turbo car , that has a six speed, and lowering springs in the 1/4 , to a 3050 pound nitrous car with the 550rwhp , but that has a Th400 with a brake , a drag suspension and a 4000rpm+ converter. Many turbo guys here have more of a street or street strip focus, with emphasis on street. But look at a more strip turbo car like Harlans. I don't think he would be down on et compared to a similar weight and power nitrous car. Look at mustang drag racing classes , drag radial supras , drag radial mustangs, and the innovative camaro.(fastest car on DR's i think.) Or again at Harlan's, which is one of the fastest , if not the fastest on the forum. Again , results speak for themselves . It's all in the setup. Man i did't know the post was that long :) lol. |

I wasn't trying to get all technical about it! :engarde: :) All I was saying is for the most part, it seems a huge turbo car would be better on the interstate. Of course if you setup the turbo car for drag it will kick ass, but it seems most don't get to that state. I never see any car around here with a turbo doing bracket racing, however :) |
I know of 900rw running very high 9s. IRS and no traction dont help the supra's cause. |
Most Supra's are just driven by morons that have no clue how to drive. My supra bone stock went 13.21@107, with downpipe, cutout and bleeder valve it went 12.01@118.XX. No tricks needed to get one down the track, just takes some skill and driving it like its stolen...no biggie. Also the supra we did turbo testing on, made 740rwhp with a smaller turbo and went 10.2@146, thats a far cry from mid 12's...hehe Jose |
I think I can say I am a case in point on a turbo "vehicle" that has great top end for what it is yet can still get a great ET vs MPH. Like stated above it's all in the setup. Granted I don't have it set up perfect yet but I'm still learning :) Looks at the majority of N/A LS1 cars and you'll find not many of them run 12.6s at as low a MPH I do. I know there are other factors at work but I'm simply saying that just because I have a turbo you don't see me running horrible ETs with crazy high MPH..... Although I almost wish I was because that would mean I had more HP. LOL |
