ORY for stock Manifolds. STS

I'm looking to buy the sts turbo kit when I get the cash (or can find financing). Since headers are of no real value with the turbo kit; I'm looking for an ORY that would replace the Factory piece. I have an Mufflex Cat back with a 3" intermediate pipe.

Chupa 10-25-2004 08:36 AM

why? it shouldn't affect the performance of the kit

CHRISPY 10-25-2004 08:55 AM

Get a MAC offroad Ypipe for stock manifolds.

I was thinking of the same thing even though I do not need it but it would just clean up the stock y-pipe look. I also thought of finding a used SLP Y-pipe or the Borla Y-pipe to put on to get rid of that flat POS stocker. I am even going to clean up my manifolds and get then coated just to look nice.

Chupa 10-25-2004 09:03 AM

Alright, seems like ORY is a misnomer though, since it still has cats before the Y, right?

Angus 10-25-2004 09:08 AM

The SLP and Borla y-pipes just replace the part from the exhaust from the cats to the cat back exhaust. A ORYP from MAC is 2 1/2 inch pipes from the manifold to the cat back exhaust with no cats in it. You will need O2 Sims or dete the O2's when tuning the car.

Chupa 10-25-2004 09:18 AM

Ah, well it seems like getting an ORY with an STS is dumb anyway, as the turbo is going to be a lot more restrictive than the cats, right?

yes... the inlets of turbos are tiny

CHRISPY 10-25-2004 10:18 AM

You will spool FASTER with no cats and have less backpressure before the turbo. I would get the MAC ORY and use your stock manifolds. You will definitely pick up power and spool faster imo.

Bassani makes a really nice stainless one that hooks up to the stock manifolds, I think that is the best way to go, the stainless will hold the heat in better than the Mac's aluminized pipes enhancing the performance a bit and it won't rust. Let me know if you need one I can get a good deal on them. Dave

yep stainless will definitely be the ticket. See if you can get a set of 00 and up stock cast manifolds as well. Those with the stainless ORY, stock stainless intermediate pipe will hold heat very well

Thanks for the info Chris and 427 LS1. I also read, either here or from a Turbo book, that the higher exhaust temps can ruin the cats. My buddies Civic definetly improved with an ORY. Went from about 12.7 to 12.5. We bolted the piece on at the track so it's definetly a back-to-back test. 2 runs with and 2 runs without. You should check out Ricer forums for Turbo info. Some of those guys really know their stuff.

Also, would Jet Hot coating of the Manifolds help. Or should I look into another type of coating.

DanZ28 10-25-2004 07:41 PM

Why wouldn't headers be ok to use?

Richiec77 10-25-2004 10:09 PM

Headers are OK to use but cost more and you won't gain as much per dollar as the set-up described above.
