what size turbo to run 7's?

hey guys........

this is my first post in the FI section. my question is basic, and i'm just trying to get a baseline for now. i am aware that there are many different parameters that directly affect what kind of times i will ultimately run, but as i stated, this is just a baseline.

for starters, race weight will likely be around 3400lbs max. the motor is a 1st gen sbc 427", that will have ported Dart 18* heads and a custom turbo grind cam. c/r is to be determined, but let's call it 8.0:1 final. i also have an accell gen 7 setup. i would like to produce 1000 rwhp on pump gas if i can, and about 1500hp total, or more if the internals can take it. i have a 2 piece neal chance converter, will coan th400, (but will step up to a rossler), and a slightly narrowed 9". basically wanting to run a 7 at least twice, to say i did, and to back it up.

the question is, will a good 88mm turbo push this kind of power? i have heard it is the largest anyone would want to go with and still drive on the street a couple times a week. like to shows, or in my case, i'm 6 miles from work. this may sound like a hokey thread, but humor me, please.

thanks,
Dave

your going to need something that is at least a large frame t-88 or larger, hopefully JZ will see this and he could chime in. you are not going to be making 1000rwhp and talk about driving around on the street, your talking an all out racing motor

its possible but not the most likely

from what i understand, i can have a manual boost controller, and tone it down if need be to like 700-800 fw for everyday. but have the ability to turn it up if i want to put on a good show.......lighting 'em up at 55mph...lol...i'm getting giddy.

more than likely a car that goes 7's will not be streetable

StoleIt Oct 30, 2004 12:42 AM

harlan is the only guy thats got a car even close to that fast that is streetable. i really doubt 7s would be streetable, turning the boost down would help but i dont think that it would make it streetable.

 Turn it down to a mear 700-800 :jest: You crack me up. 700-800 is PLENTY to put on a show and 'light em up' and is pretty dangerous to be racing that on the street if you ask me.

You don't need 700 to light up street tires at 55mph :eek2: I've gone sideways on the freeway with a bit less power hitting 3'rd

At 3400 lbs a GT47-88 will not get you into the 7's. You will need a larger unit, somewhere in the 9Xmm-10X range. Those units all use the same frame, so fitment will not change between any of those units. As for turning the boost down, you very well can do it. I have a customer running a T91 and only 10 psi. He's running a pair of Turbosmart 48mm progates to be able to bleed that much air off. It can be done, but not easy.

thanks jose....

they say just about anything can be done with the right amount of $$$$$. i'm not sure if i'm actually going to get to this level, by choice, because i don't want a full funnycar type 25.2 cage for a car that WILL see some street time. but 8.50's is for sure. i'm not trying to outdo harlan or anyone, just want something nasty. thanks for the responses guys.

Little birdie told me a V6 Buick from the Carolina's has been 5.10's in the 1/8 with the 47/88. That's real close to 7.90's on a full pass. If it spools well enough on a V6 to 60 foot like that then a V8 should have no problem

I think 1000rwhp is difficult on straight 93.

I would shoot for 700-800rwhp on pump.

Only thing I can see being an issue is that some cars run huge converters to run in the 7's... other than that you can always run a stepdown box for a big fuel pump and I'm sure you can rig up exhaust.

hey prostock.....

i just spoke with jimmy, the guy i bought my new car from. he says you were looking into it? don't know if you realize it's the same one or not, or if you are who he is thinking of. but he did say your name and that you were part of ls1 tech, like a moderator or something. not sure why i mention this, just thought it was interesting.

btw, i thought i've seen that kind of power before on pump gas. heck, isn't ATI Prochargers Nova a low 8 sec., 1500+ hp car? sure it's a big block, but it's also
a 427! guess i'll just have to find out huh?

thanks,
Dave

A white 98Z? Jimmy from where? Congrats on your purchase. You should do some research on John Meany's C4, it has a big SBC and twin turbos and has some of the same parts you are talking about.

with a 427 ci ,18*head you should be able to make huge power.i was contemplating a similar setup in my 3rd gen=355-383 ci,t88,holley 950 mpfi.i want to drive 40 miles to track, run high 5s in 1/8th,then drive home.then i realized how much money it would take.huge pump, injectors, big fmic, and still haven't found any complete 3rd gen turbo kits.good luck with your quest.is your block and heads o-ringed?

mongse Nov 3, 2004 03:46 PM

If you're talking about just puttin around on the street with it, keep it out of boost and it'll cruise around just fine. I looked into a similar setup before i built my TT car. 400+ cube Motown block, Brodix 18X heads, converted EFI intake, FAST ECM, single 94mm, Madman suspension, TH400, 9", blah blah blah.

Remember that streetability is in the eye of the beholder. Some people can't live w/o power steering. Others are fine to sit on a milk crate and shift using a screwdriver in a stripped out car. ;) 7's is a lofty goal, but I think 8s are definitely doable, especially w/ an 18* motor.

You should look into Brady's 90-some MM, 18* Dart motor setup.

hello everyone,

I'm new to the board but not new to boosted F-bodys.
7's on the street IS Possible, My friends mustang made over 1400hp(101mm turbo) on the dyno and runs 8.0's in the quarter and he drives it approx 20miles one way to the local cruise spot once a week.

Pray Hard, Just run the twin 60-1's I talked to you about and you will make 1200 hp and 980 ft/lb (at the crank), all day long on pumpgas. This will be good for about 155-160 mph. Regardless of E.T. this will put a smile on your face. I can build you a tt setup that will be amazing. I would just be happy with that, and you will have one of the fastest pumpgas street cars in the country. I am putting the same turbo setup on my little LS1. But it wont make near the power yours will. Your motor will be insane, It already is! I could only dream of having a motor like that. ;) Your motor, right now, will smoke the tires on the freeway. Matter of fact that sounds fun, I'll be right back. :jest:

How about some solid consistent 11 second better yet 12 second passes before you start giving out seven second advice! :STFU::wave-fing
