Intercooling question for TA's

After doing the plate-cutout mod for an FMIC and leaving a bracket to re-attach the front license when desired, would it be really bad for the engine to drive around with it on? For example, I will take a drive to a car meet but I want the front cover on until I get there to keep the FMIC hidden. Would it have any negative side effects on the engine that the FMIC is blocked even if I drive very VERY softly w/o getting into any boost, really, and only get on it if it is off (for around 8psi)?

i would think as long as your not getting into boost you would be fine, cause once your in boost the turbo(im assuming its a turbo) would actually be used.

You know, it made sense to me (turbo), but I just posted just in case (I'm very paranoid when it come to anything about tmy car). Heck, some people even actually run non-intercooled turbo's and run them out of AND into the boost. I didn't see anything wrong, but I was just checking. Thanks! :)

Do you have any way to log your IAT's??

Kit is not on yet... :(

I'm just starting to plan... I will not have a way to check the IAT's right away after the install, but I will later when I buy more goodies, I hope.

You won't have any problem even if you get on it a little for a short period. The IC will act as a heat sink for short bursts, but with no airflow will heat up quickly and cool down slowly. If your IC is right up against the radiator, you might not be able to boost at all, but you can still drive around OK.

Beauty of a turbo car and a LS1, you can shift at 2,000 RPMs, make no boost, and still have no problems driving around.

why do you want to keep it hidden, show that intercooler off proudly!

No doubt I will, but I know there will be sometimes that I want to see the bird on as well, so the phoenix doesn't feel left out, ya know? :)

... and no problems even taking some cars like that, too. :jest:

Actually, with that small opening covered up, you might have overheating problems. Are the FMIC side tanks blocking the old air intakes to the radiator?

They might be, I definitely need to double-check that. Thanks!

I think we are just putting a mesh grill infront of mine to hide it.. so it wont be to evident that I have a FMIC.

On mine i could tell a 20 degree rise in radiator temps with the cover on.. vs with it off.... it does block alot of the radiator..... We will see with my new setup.....
