Default GWP ATI Procharger D-1SC vs. TWO 454 Big Blocks!

I started the day on my side of town (back home in the country) by racing a Chevy 68 Nova with a small block 400 in it and 4.56 gears (automatic). He was running really wide Hoosiers. I couldn't leave with him... also, I babied it off the line (you know what my ET Streets did to my last rear end). When we got about halfway of the quarter I ran him down and passed him. At the end of the quarter I had gained enough to pull over in his lane.

He said, “I know you can beat me, but I just want to see that power again. You passed me like I stopped about half way.”

This time, I put more pressure on it out the hole, but still I didn't floor it. This time I stayed behind him by about two car lengths at the start and ended the quarter four or five car lengths ahead. This is the first time I showed them all what it did full out, and this was the fastest car running in that community, so they got excited about getting me to some bigger guys.

About 2 or 3 hours later we had a crowd at another 1/4-mile stretch in another countryside community. The competitors (I have to admit my coolness had turned to a jittery-butterfly stomach): A hopped-up 70's Camaro with a 454 running slicks / 4.56's and a similarly hopped-up Buick (454).

We agreed there'd be no spraying.

You could hear the Buick crank up from a mile away and when he pulled up, you could hear the snickers and grins as my "pretty-boy" T/A fired up with it's capped headers. We did some burnouts and staged. The Buick jumped out in front of me by about three cars, but he lost it and ran of the road (I think that was an excuse to start the race again, because I passed him). We came back and staged again. By about 3/4 of the 1/4 mile I passed him. He switched drivers and tried again... no difference.

So the big-daddy (the guy I mentioned earlier that whup’d up on other's race cars when I was a kid) walked over to me and said, I can't beat you without spraying, but I'll give you a run. But we won't use a flagman... you give me the "hit" (he takes off first). I grinned!

He drove back home and came back with the 454 Camaro with slicks and skinnies on the front. Everyone KNEW I was going to get handed my head this time, and that car DID sound awesome! It runs 7.20s in the 8th, and I knew on the street with my drag radials and his slicks, that it was a toss-up if he drove it hard!

We did our burnout and staged.

He nodded and took off. He was immediately three car-lengths in front of me and THEN he took the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I had to roll behind him looking for an opening. Once he stopped spinning, he took his lane. By this time I was halfway thru 2nd gear and I floored it! Halfway of the track, I could feel the 'Black Gal' constantly gaining, I but I could still see his rear bumper. 3/4's and we were side by side... I could just see him in the corner of my eye, but the boost was at 10 PSI and I KNEW I was still accelerating faster than him.

As we hit the 1/4-mile traps, I moved over in his lane as we blasted past the crowd! MAN what a rush! Everybody wanted to know what was going on, and money was changing hands.

Drivers changed and they wanted another shot. The loudmouth funnyman that was earlier talking how I would get my nuts handed to me was talking trash to the other drivers now, and I was his best friend.

The next driver took off better (again, he got the 'hit'), and I was once again looking at a gray Camaro sitting in the middle of the road. He moved over and I floor it too quickly this time, going up in smoke. I gained on him similarly, but was too far behind. We passed the traps together, but I lost that one.

Big money started coming out, but I got an agreement that we'd use a flagman and if a driver crossed the other man's lane, they forfeited the race. More talk, and the sun was down. They couldn't race anymore because he had no working headlights on the car.

The guy with the Ford Lightning Truck and '98 Cobra declined to race.

These were pure racecars, running on muscle. They can't be legally driven on the street. I drive mine to work every day, fifty-five miles round trip, most of that bumper to bumper (which Is hard on the stall). The Golden West Performance ATI Procharger D-1SC is AWESOME. I convince everybody there yesterday... and they acknowledge that I owed that road.!

Yep, the bottom end is stock. I have MAC headers/cats/y-pipe, programming, larger injectors, another fuel pump and some suspension stuff. It's in my siggy.

I guess I got a little literary with it, but I wanted to convey the impact of the event... it was awesome! I've re-read my post a number of times too.

I don't understand your question about shearing teeth off the belt.

When I had a s/c installed on my vette 2 years ago by so called professionals it kept shearing the teeth off the belt (not breaking it just tearing the teeth by the cog wheel)in only a couple of days after installation with moderate driving. Afterwards of course the s/c was disabled and the car ran on vacuum only. After 2 attempts without sucess I had them remove it. Hopefully, that has been corrected with proper tension. I wonder how much time and labor is involved to replace the belt and/or the cog?

You do have to keep up with the tension, but so far, my belt is ok. It is a six-ribbed belt that fits into grooves on the pulley.

To remove the belt on the procharger, you must back off the tensioner bolt (about 10 secs), back off on the tightening bolt that runs thru the idler pulley (another 10 secs).

Now the more involved part. There are four or five hex bolts that are in a tight area with limited movement that attaches the compressor to the main bracket. It took me about 15 minutes to back these screws out. You then must unscrew one of the bolts holding the main bracket and stud on to slip the belt out.

You must do that hard part (removal of the hex bolts) to get to the bolt that holds one portion of the main bracket and that stud to the block. It is the stud that keeps you from just removing the belt after slackening it and slipping it off the pulleys.

Counting jacking the car up and putting it on two jack stands, I'd say it is a 20 minute job when you know what tools you need. It will take most people 30 or 40 minutes the first time, due to trying different length hex wrenches that optimize how quickly you remove the compressor from the bracket. The bolts are 9/16ths. They say the hex bolts are M10x100, but one of them is bigger/beefier.

Since I hear they are putting spray on that 454, I don't think I'll tell them right away what I'm packing.

I'll wait 'til a little later.

Great kill story, there is a post on the Corvetteforum about why ATI procharger cars don't turn good times in the 1/4. I responded that they don't know how to drive their cars. I think I will use your times as an example. Good job smoking those big blocks!
