It's Official... 383 Stroker AND 12-Bolt Rear!

Ok... I done gone and done it.

I'm going to get the 12-bolt AND a 383 stroker...

Anyone wanna guess what kinda RWHP/RWTQ I'll put down and what the times might be?

I plan on sticking with the same 3.20" pulley.
I don't know how the boost will be affected by the heads/cam and extra cubes. Anyone wanna venture some ideas?

jeeeezzzzuuuussss

heads/cam/stroker?

600's my friend

time to look for some HUGE injectors and pump to go along with it.

my guess is you will lose a few PSI of boost.

rwhp i would say probably around low 600s with a auto and mid 600s with a 6 speed car.... haha

Low 600's is my guess, too, with a set of heads and a mild cam.

I think the biggest injector I can do is 50#.

Definitely, I will stick with the 3.20 pulley. If PSI drops too much, I think ATI is planning on making a larger crank pulley. But, I'll be happy for quite some time if I hit 600 RWHP with lower boost... more manageable on the pump gas.

well when i put on my heads cam my boost was cut in half,i went from the 3.1 pulley to a 2.75.

Any tips on taking out and replacing the motor? I haven't done that since my older 350 days.

Thanks!

Easy. Despite what others may say, it is easiest to take the motor out from the top. Remove all accessories including the radiator/condensor set up. Move the motor forward and it will come up the top.

Who is doing the engine?

Why not all bore 382?

Will you need to go to a smaller pulley to make up for the loss in manifold pressure (boost)?

Guess you better order a cage too, eh!

Re: It's Official... 383 Stroker AND 12-Bolt Rear!

Thanks, Voodoo Child, for the advice. Jason told me I may as well go ahead and take it out the traditional way, too. He said I'd have to take all the accessories off, but I could get it.

Speed Demon, Golden West Performance is building the 383 for me, and prepping it to withstand / manage the boost. I already have the smaller 3.20" pulley. I've been playing with fire running the boost so high, anyway. With the extra RPMs my new cam will let met turn up, peak boost will likely increase, making up some of what I will lose due to the other changes.

Not that it will really help me in practice since my motor is currently being built, I'd still like to understand the pro's and con's of the 383 Lingenfelter style motor vs. the 382 All-bore you refer to.

Thanks!

Jesus, Mikey's getting serious over there! I can smell that VISA card burning from here!

Mike, I've got a few questions for ya. I'm about to pick up LS1 edit, I haven't been able to get straight answeres from anyone.

Basically, I was picking up some (2-3) KR with the 3.4 pulley, 93 octane. I haven't paid attention to the total timing as of yet.

Though I have put in some 100 octane and it solved the prob. I called Jason, asked if it was possible to store to programs on one programmer (one for the good gas, one for pump gas), and your name came up. Obviously the best way to do it is to get LS1 edit and switch back and forth.

I'm curious to know how you go in and change timing tables. Do you just set base timing and that's it? Will the car compensate for hotter weather by itself or do you have to tell it to?

I realy want to know how the software is laid out before I buy it.

I'd also like to hear your advice, trials, tricks, and tribulations in 'DIY custom programming'.

Anyone else with this experience, please feel free to chime in as well.

Re: It's Official... 383 Stroker AND 12-Bolt Rear!

Rock, there are "High" and "Low Octane Spark Advance vs RPM and Load" tables where you vary the timing from 400 RPMs to 8000 RPMs by Grams per Cylinder (Air Flow). You actually can vary the Timing Value in each cell. The Grams/Cylinder range is .08 to .80.

I have not played with the types of things that require WOT for me to test, since I am waiting for my 12-bolt, and hope to have my 383 soon after. So I can not, for instance, tell you how much I might vary the values to reduce KR, or how much to change injector flow rates to adjust my rich condition to a leaner A/F ratio. (Recall I ran 10.0:1 A/F from about 4000 to 5500, and ramped up to 11.7:1 at 6400 RPMs.

I hope that gave you some ideas, though.

Re: It's Official... 383 Stroker AND 12-Bolt Rear!

I would just hate to spend bouceaup cash on a half day dyno session and not get the thing running right.

I hate to have someone else do something I can do, and I take any chance I can get when it comes to learning something new. But I can't help but feel a little intimidated.

When you say 'cell', I assume you are talking about one coordiante on a 3D graph? WOT tunning I might be able to handle... part throttle I don't know.

Is there an interface that "shims" up or down the entire timing or fuel curve?

Does the stock engine management system adjust base timing in respect to IAT? A better question might be what will the PCM do when it detects a higher IAT?

And how can it tell the octane you are running?

I read a great book about Ford engine management... is there a book out about LS1 engine management? I'm sure it's close but knock sensors are another input and probably do more than just tell the computer to pull timing.

Can I find these answers in a factory service manual?

Re: It's Official... 383 Stroker AND 12-Bolt Rear!

Look at the differences in what they did with the stock tune and your tune for the SC. Scope those differences. Since I am running rich, and I already know it from my last dyno, I would have me a couple flash files ready. Actually, I'd try to dial it in monitoring O2's and KR. THEN, I'd try to fine tune it more at the dyno. The A/F ratio is not likely to be flat, so some higher degree adjustment will be necessary at some RPMs than others. I think it should be a bit richer up to peak Torque and get a bit leaner the rest of the way up.

I'm just speculating.

Yes... you can adjust values over a selected range or for the whole table by a percentage OR by a set value.

When you get LS1-Edit and start looking, let's talk about it some more.

I'm no expert, but I'm trying to learn and understand.

Mike, I'm with you. I want to understand this before I spend half a G.

I'm going to go check if I can DL the program and play around with it without hooking it up to the car.
