My Turbo Z28 Begins...

Well I am gonna see this project through even if it breaks me. I have changed my combo once again, but I am definatley going with a turbo setup. I have ordered my shortblock, heads, turbo, and FMIC this week. My setup should look like below:

Motor:
-346ci 8.5:1
-Dished Turbo pistons
-Stock Rods
-Stock Crank
-All ARP hardware
-Stock LQ9 6.0L heads
-LS6 intake and TB
-LS6 cam

Turbo Kit:
-6.0L Turbo setup (built 100% by myself)
-2.5inch feed pipes
-3inch down pipe
-Hybrid T70 66mm turbo 1.05 A/R
-FMIC 31x12x4
-3inch cold side pipes
-Tail 50mm BOV
-Tial 38mm Wastegate

I still have to finish fabbing up the turbo system. Turbo should be here in 5 or 6 days. I have alot of other things to buy, Fuel system, and such. I have plenty of work ahead of me. I have to get around the tuning issues with my HPTuners software and the 98 PCM. I am really following Kyles setup as far as that goes. This MAFT setup looks promising.

My goals are 550rwhp/550rwtq. I think that is very doable. :drive:

I will take plenty of pics as parts arrive and work progresses. This should be fun.

I will have flanges specifically machined for the 6.0L exh. manifolds, let me know if you'll need a set.

Looks like it will be a sweet setup!

I already have all the flanges and such for the turbo setup. The only things I lack for the turbo setup are the BOV and WG.

They are in production now so I don't have a final cost. I'll let you know if you're interested. These are laser cut from 3/8'' mild steel to exact tolerances and measurements. They will be a nice piece.

Sorry for the hi-jack.

Good luck and be sure to post up pic's.

I will have pics up as soon as I get a little progress made. My turbo shipped out today. Hope to have it by the end of the week. My motor wont be ready for 3 weeks or so. I am mocking the kit up on my stock LS1 motor on the stand. So far all I have done is the merge pipe into the T4 flange.

I need a source for the Alternator relocation bracket. Any help is appreciated.

smokinHawk 03-07-2006 06:35 AM

if it was me id go with a bigger downpipe for that 88, but thats just what i did. ;)

Josh@KY-Turbo 03-07-2006 06:52 AM

If I can make it fit i am planning on going with a 4 inch down pipe. I dont see it being a problem since I am using a Pro-Fab tubular K-member.

Jonathan (smokinhawk) has a nice relocation bracket. He made mine and it fit and works perfectly. That is, if you haven't already talked to him.

Good luck on your build-up. Should make plenty of power.

later,
Dave

here is how i got mine to fit through my bmr k-member.

Josh@KY-Turbo 03-07-2006 12:30 PM

I got a alt. relocation bracket ordered from him today.

I have my setup planned to have the turbo sitting directly in front of the motor. I plan to do some cutting to the core support to gain more clearance.

My setup may be changing once again also. I am having to put the wife through School (just found that out) and money got real tight real quick. I am looking a doing a forged 346 for the car maybe to save some money. The turbo will be on the large side of the stock cube motor but i can grow into it later on down the road.

I did recieve my FMIC and my Hybrid T70 66mm turbo today. I will snap some pics this afternoon and get them hosted.

The saga continues...

Josh@KY-Turbo 03-08-2006 12:48 AM

Here are some pics of the parts I got in over the last few weeks and today.
Pics are of my Hybrid T70 66mm turbo, FMIC, Aeromotive pump and rails, 42lb injectors, my mockup motor with the mainfolds mounted, and my merge collector to T4 flange (tigged by me).

i will post pics of the PT-88 when it arrives.

hope you guys enjoy. i have along weekend the week. i will get alot more done then.

NA$TY-TA 03-08-2006 08:20 AM

cool man...... is that pump just the A1000???
Prob wont be enough pump in the end........
should be fine for now though since you only plan on running 42# injecters.

Kyle

Josh@KY-Turbo 03-08-2006 09:41 AM

I plan on running Dual A1000's. I just took a pic of one of them. The injectors will probably get replaced with some 60's before it is said and done. This car is slowly turning back into a street car due to unforseen circumstances. All I am aiming for now is a reliable 550rwhp street car with the 66mm turbo.

The PT-88 will be going on a 99-up 6spd car down the road with a hotter setup. It wont be my daily driver though. That project wont start until the wife is out of school.

Excellent!! Glad to see you going through with this project. Keep posting pics of your set up as it progresses!!

How much was that merge to make, I need one of those, but need to learn to weld first...

dynedta 03-08-2006 02:10 PM

looking good! turbo ls1's are deffinately becoming a very popular thing which is deffinately a good thing

Josh@KY-Turbo 03-08-2006 02:14 PM

That merge cost me a grand total of maybe $75 dollar and an hour to make. I still have to add the Wate Gate flange under the T4 flange. I am finishing up the cross over pipe now. I am trying to keep the turbo low enough to not have to cut up the core support on this car, but high enough to have good oil drain back. I will have more pics by the weekend or sooner.

Thanks for the support guys, back to work...

SPANKY LS1 03-08-2006 03:15 PM

Nice manifolds. ;)

Sounds like a sweet setup, keep the progress pics coming.
