The reason that maf tuning is safer is because the maf has a thin wire in there that heats up and it uses the outside air to cool it in order to see how much air is introduced. In FI application this is only good up to a certain point because you have air rushing in faster than the maf is able to read. That is why you go to a SD tune or Speed Density where it reads the amount of air is entering it but when the variables like elevation and humidity change very quick you have to tune for that because it is only looking at the SPEED of the incoming air... Yes there's a IAT sensor and it's totally seperate...It's usually on your lid if I'm correct or somewhere around there...

So the IAT sensor does nothing to adjust your mixture when you're using a MAP only setup? Is there any way to configure the MAP setup to adjust for changes in temperature, etc?

not really man...That's why many guys have different tunes for different weather conditions or elevations...A maf can tune pretty far though...I'm pretty sure that KP is still running one and he's in the 9's...

Our stock MAP is a 2bar MAP. Most owners upgrade to a 3bar/chip combo and use the MAP from the '89 TTA.

agreed. people go maf-less when they arent even boosted.

no idea why youd keep the maf...go 2/3 bar. end of story. if running under 15 psi of boost, you can get a cobalt ss map sensor, plugs right into the lsx intake with no mods and you just plug the pcm harness into it. the 3 bar is trickier as you need an adaptor harness as well as you have to run boost refernce into it, you cant plug it into the manifold.

I ran MAF-less N/A, and now also with a 2-bar FI setup with methanol. My tune works just fine in cool wet weather, and warm/dry. I can dial in whatever AFR I choose to improve fuel economy at lighter loads and idle. I'll never run a MAF again until emissions time.

Will the SD tune ultimately give you more power and its only limitation is to adjust for the atmospheric/weather conditions?

will the tune greatly vary with SD if its tuned for 95 degrees/60% humidity and then you run at night when it drops to 80 degrees at lets say 30-40% humidity.

I'm interested in trying this but our weather changes and I want that safety margin of the MAF.

A true SD tune will not be affected by normal weather changes. Now, if you go from Death Valley to Denver, CO, I can assume there will be some tweaks, but its not a carb. Every OBD1 car was SD. I have no experience with SD-tuning the stock LSx PCM, but in theory you shouldnt have to do much if anything. If its FI, ditch the MAF, period. If you have the money, get BS3, period.

We also have IAT sensors. In stock form they can adjust timing depending on weather. You can even put a resister in the sensor to trick into seeing a certain temp...that's old school.
