How to bring your IAT's down, pics inside Well last I finally had a successful track trip, first one since April, last two trips i didn't even make a full pass,i've had a horrendous year breakage/bad luck wise, car ran a new best by several tenths but what held me back from better numbers was my IAT's at 180 degrees, was really bad. my bumper was totally blocking my front mount. Today I took the car to Hacker Joe(who painted my car), he opened up the front of the bumper HUGE and setup the carriage works billet grill I got. When i got home tonite I hit up home depot and got 50 bucks worth of alumium sheets, bolts and nuts, silicone, double sided tape, paint etc, etc and went to town sealing this intercooler to the bumper. I think it came out really nice, one of the best fabrication projects I've done on on this car. took me 5 hours to get it all just right and solid enough. Sprayed everything flat black. One piece is bolted to the bumper and then to the bottom of the intercooler. then there are flaps bolted to the front of the interooler out to the bumper edges, with the slit between the flaps and the bottoms sheet siliconed tight, etc. I could have made those flaps taller, but didn't like how they fit that way. you can see in one pic how I did make a flap on top as well, so air is not coming in and going over the intercooler, it gets shoved down into it as well. Should work damn good, we'll find out next weekend weather providing, and I might have a coupld more tricks up my sleeve before then too:D |
if u really want to lower ur IATs get a nitrous intercooler cooler (N2cooler) that will lower ur IATs by 40 degrees, just alittle side point, and u can make one for like 150 bucks..... |
yup i have plenty of N20 stuff laying around, kinda of trying to avoid the added weight of a N20 bottle, etc for now. |
Meth is the answer to IAT control. That IC does look nice. :) |
Nice job! |
Looks good!!!!! :D |
Open intercooler works great, thats even better blocking off the sides. We would run 120 degree's at the end of a run like that.Added a stupid amount of Meth and now it's at 70 degree's at the end :) |
i need to get out to my car and add some side and top bottom blockers to get all the flow going through the i/c |
Very nice work mate! i love the loook of a well boxed in intercoolet setup! N2o intercooler spray bars dont really do that much. they only really cool the cooler before the run! as soon as you start boosting the intercooler will be back upto temp in no time! if your set on using N2o, spary it INTO the intake! then you get the cooling benifits and the power ioncreas! :) Meth works good to! :) thanks Chris. |
Looks good, can you post a pic from the front in daylight? :) |
Pimp as always Sean...and as always...I hate you... |
Pretty sweet! I am really thinking about adding a small meth shot to drop IAT's. I had one on my GN and when you got on it not only did the IAT's drop but the freakin' COOLANT temps dropped! As in you could actually floor it, look at the temp gauge, and watch it drop. Meth is awesome. Those N2O coolers have been proven worthless, like the other guy said, spray it into the motor if you want it to work. So has this mod affected coolant temps at all? |
if N20 is used the plan is to plumb it directly into the intercooler. small shot with the hope that it would mostly dissapate by the time it hit the motor and just freeze the air charge more than burn in the motor much at all. car is making enough power on boost for now lol. Thanks guys. Chris--sure I will get some daylight shots as soon as I can. I know its hard to see exactly what I did b/c i painted it all flat black and was taking pics at nite with no light. you guys might be convincing me on a meth kit over the winter. 70 degrees on IAT's? holy crap lol. |
do it |
Looking good man. Kyle |
That looks nice, still going to paint the grille to match the flames? That would be trick. |
well, Joe and I on first impression think it looks just fine with the polished face and the back and inserts of the grill being in flat black like it came. but that's for now. come winter time we'll be evaluating a few upgrades to the paint and body work on the car and the grille would def be one of the things being looked at then. |
That looks good, I've often thought about doing the same thing but put a 10 inch fan on the incoming side of the IC to see if it has an effect on heat soak. Seems to be working but i'll have to make a track visit to see how well its really working. |
So how did the open front end effect coolant temps? Better or worse? |
Wow, air passing through the intercooler......imagine that  I've been telling you to do this since the begining of time. Next time I'll just kick you in the nuts. :eek2: |
