hey guys ive been noticing that alot of you have some big clionies running high boost and very high power numbers using the stock cast crank. Does anyone know if the metal composition of the ls1 crank would be the same as an older say early 80's cast crank? starting to think I may want to try it with 15psi of boost. |
the crank is cast iorn but it has rolled fillets on the side edges of the main journals which eliminates the stress risers in that area where most cast cranks fail. I know of several people running 800 hp on the stock crank. dont forget also that we have 6 bolt mains and a deep skirt block. this makes for an extremly ridged combination |
I think 15psi with a stock LS1 crank is no problem. Harlan pushed a stock crank the farthest, I think he saw 28 or 30 psi with his old combo. He could comment as to whether the crank had any issues after that racing season. But I thought he reused the crank in his boosted truck. |
thanks for the replies much appriciated |
oh yea spend your money elsewhere mines gone over 1100 at the crank backward calculating yes i'm bragging :) |
I just came across the post of the crash, I know you probably heard is a thousand time so here is 1001 glad to see your ok, think of it this way could have been alot worse. You were able to walk away from it, which means you can start your much anticipated rebuild. 1100 @ the crank????????????????????????????? Are you kidding, stock cast crank. Around here in the not so great white north cast stuff is concidered boat anchors, but then again everyone up here are real professioals if you catch my meaning. |
From what I undrstand, our cranks are Nodular Iron. And yes, the stock cranks are strong as hell. I am somewhere around 800-830 at the crank with mine. Stock Crank, GTG! |
stock crank here. no worries. all our big hp FI LSX build use the stock crank. i should be somewhere over 900 FWHP, along with my buddies poocharged car. still strong |

Only time I would go with a aftermarket crank is for cubes.... |
no no no here in the unperfessional north, cast stuff cant rev past 5000rpm and exceed 400hp so you absolutely need to purchase 4340 crank rods and custom pistons, total outlay of approx 5grand give or take depending if they give you a so call "dont tell anyone how much you paid" deal |
oooooh, i gotcha |
