m6 or th400 for D1SC???
I know that there are several guys that have done really well with the th400 but how many out of them drive them regularly on the street???
I'm in the dilemma of having to decide to continue down the path of building my T56 or go with the th400...I just would honestly rather build it once and be confident that I won't have to change out the clutch constantly... The only real negative factor that is making me have second thoughts is the mpg with the th400... I'm going to be going home in about a year and this won't be a dd anymore but until then it's pretty much my only transportation to and from work which is a 20 mile per way...
I know that with a turbo you can go with a 2.73 rearend and have decent mpg when you do drive it around... Would this be feasible for me or would this completely kill the performance that I was trying to gain with switching??

It really depends on your overall goals. From what you said of your immediate needs, gas mileage and having a high rear gear ratio I'm going with the T56.
For no compromise strip performance I'd say T400 with an appropriate gear and converter of course. You will however not like that combo for your daily transportation since you're used to your T56.

MPG isn't seriously everything...I just don't want to go from 25mpg to -15mpg... I understand that there are compromises but I'm just trying to weigh my options... My real goal is to get low consistant 10's. KP has shown that several times and he's one of the people that have made me even consider a th400... That's hard to do consistantly with an M6...

You are correct, but Kevin will tell you his car isn't really streetable anymore. (converter will flash over 5000) If low 10's are the goal then I'm all in for the T400. A good 9" converter that goes 3800-4400 and locks up well in high gear would be a lot of fun. You'll want 3.73's in the rear. Expect mileage to suffer hard.
You can do it with the T56, but you'll want a clutch that doesn't hit very hard. Your Centerforce is out for durable performance there. Not saying you couldn't run 9.90 on your DualFriction but a more race friendly clutch will be way easier on your driveline and not hit the engine so hard on the launch. Since you have 2 overdrives I'd run a 4.10 gear at least with the stick.

I wouldn't want to go as high of a converter as Kevin has...But I just like the simplicity of how it runs regularly between .2 or .3 each time...With an m6 it's like rolling dice sometimes because of multiple conditions...
Thank you for all of your input Andereck... You're honestly giving me a lot to think of and giving me both sides of the coin...
BTW go E85 =)

nowadays its not hard to find a tranny to hold power, its the expensive clutches. hell look a Kyle(NASTY-TA) he runs a damn glide in his daily driver and loves it. i would go with the t400 because it will do good at the track and on the road. th400 with a t'brake

Think parasitic drag, not to mention the 4L80E is a monster weight wise. But for overdrive, you're right. You'd have to have a lockup converter built then to utilize the overdrive without killing the transmission and then you're back to a compromise with the converter.

You would be really surprised how this converter drives around, I have had 3200 'street' converters that felt looser then this one.
But it really depends on your goals with the car, one nice thing about an auto is you arent making 25 passes at the track to make one 'good one' plus it really is easier on the whole drivetrain if you drag race the car. I would have no problem driving my car 20 miles each way (used to drive it to the track a lot thats 50 miles away) with the TH400, its the loud exhaust, loud fuel pump, uncomfortable seat and roll cage that sucks. But the engine/trans and rear is very docile just driving around, even with an 8" converter, just make sure and buy a good torque converter
You can always leave the manual trans in for now and swap it over to an auto when you arent using the car for a daily driver anymore.

I'm going to run my M6 for the first summer just for fun with a spec stage 3+.
After a summer or so of bangin gears spinin tires and loosing races I will be doing a TH400 with a brake 9" rear with a very high gear 3.08 or something.
I would do a search in the tranny forums you will get all kinds of different opinions.

For the record my hotrod has a Liberty prepped TKO600 with faceplate shift mod. The same car has had M21's, Liberty cast iron T10, Super T10, powerglide and a TH400. I prefer to row my own. Automatics are far less maintenece overall. I've broken everything between the flywheel and lugnuts at least once.

I just don't want to venture down one road to have to backtrack and go down another... That's why I'm going to decide the fate of my car now and commit to that direction... I'm not really big into road racing...I respect it like any other racing but straight line drag racing is honestly where my passion is... To each their own though... Believe me, it's honestly going to kill me to let the m6 go but once I actually get to run through the gears a couple of times I think that I'll be very happy... I do work hard for my money (like 99.9% of the rest of the people on here) and I don't want to have to buy a textrailia or mcleod every season or two when it could be used better somewhere else...WHY CAN'T TH400'S HAVE AN OVERDRIVE!!! I know about the gear splitters but like stated they are very parasitic and are more for a high hp cruiser in my opinion... Plus that's quite a bit of money going in a direction that I don't want to go...$2500 can buy a quite a bit of gas... =)
Thanks everyone for your input... Every M6 lover that has contemplated converted over has went through my pain and hopefully this will help FI guys (mostly centri guys) decide which is right for them...
Mods: thank you for letting this ride in here because as many know it's hard to get an answer when it comes to Forced Inducted questions because everyone knows that people that have real world experience is in this section. Keep your opinions and experiences coming...
