I was just curious as to who runs an air filter on the high end race setups. Do even the race only guys run air filters on their turbo setups or just leave it open? I'll be racing more than street driving ( but I will be driving on the street on the weekends), but I was thinking I should definitely go w/an air filter for my S88 setup that's just about ready. I was just going to get everyone's input. Thanks--Andy

I've never used one on my pt88 set-up, and I had no problems..now my t91 got a very small nick in the wheel but trying to fit an air filter that flows that much is going to be a problem.

I run twins and have run both cheap filters and steel mesh screens. Haven't noticed much of a power difference difference between the two. Maybe when I step the boost up a little more the filter will be a bigger restriction?

I run a filter on my single setup at 700 rwhp and 146 mph in the quarter. As with any centrifugal compressor, getting rid of restrictions upstream of the compressor nets big gains downstream. So, I'm sure taking it off would help me some. My only advice is to use as large of a filter as you can fit.

Not a turbo but I use a big air filter on the blower, runs the same with or without it. But the dustbowl/gravel pit tracks I run at I would leave the filter on even if it slowed me down a little

Same here, Keeping the engine clean inside is worth quite a bit in my book, and one decent sized pebble could ruin your turbos day.

Andy I am glad you made this thread. You already know what I think, but for everyone else.

A mesh screen is all I have ever run. It is all I will ever run. If your build in a street car that is gonna see the daily commute 90% of its life by all means put a filter on it. If you are building a max effort street strip car that will see the street on weekends forget it. Dust isnt gonna kill a turbo. A filter isnt gonna keep the dust out at 16+lbs. Been there, done that, I know. A mesh screen keep all the crap out that would be harmful to the turbo, and allows maximum flow with very little restriction. I could list several of the fastest turbo guys on this board and many others that do not run filters. There is no need. We know who most of them are.

I dont know, this filter gets aweful dirty for not catching any dust.

Dont be so sure that mesh isnt just as much of a restriction, take a blowgun and see how it will blow a fine mesh screen across the shop. A large air filter isnt as restrictive as some think it is.

I dont worry about the turbo/blower as much as the engine, if it doesnt cost you any power why not use one. All out class racing guys that rebuild their engine every couple months it obviously doesnt matter if they are looking for hundreths of a second but I've picked enough small rocks out of the inlet of my intercooler to put the filter back on

I am not saying it wont catch any at all by any means. My old 95 Mustang ran a 398ci with 91.5mm turbo. I ran a filter. It collected dust, as did the turbo, and intercooler and everything else. I took the filer off and went with the Mesh screen from then on out. More room for the turbo placment.

Just so everyone knows, I am building Andy's S88 setup. I am rebuilding I should say. The first setup didnt allow for an air filter other than the Mesh screens I always use. He decided he wanted a filter and now I am re-doing the setup to allow room for an air filter.

I would say most guys with fast turbo cars dont run one because they cant fit a big one. Most street/strip turbo cars around here run small filters on the street and take them off at the track.

I dont know if I would redo everything JUST for an air filter if it was more of a race car though. Really depends where you race at and where the turbo itself is, my blower is very low and the inlet is a little under the core support so it picks up a lot of trash.

Fitting the filter is gonna be a pain. The average 5" filter is 9" long. Where I did the origianl cross over had the turbo inlet even with the front frame rail. Nice and tucked in the engine bay and gave a perfect route for the DP. Now I am back to the drawing board trying to get an air filter to fit. It has been a big set back in the production of this setup. Oh well.

KP that may be an option. I am tryin to work a deal for those Hot Part's at the moment. I am tryin to pick up a 98 Z28 roller to do a 25.2 10' Tire car out of. I want to get back into the chassis game again and do some high end drag radial stuff on a stock style suspension. If it doesnt pan out you will be the first to know.

I don't have one and never will.I'm not concerned about a little dust but a small critter or bird probably wouldn't burn very well.

I've never seen a fast turbo car(sub 8.50) running a filter.I'm sure it would be a huge performance killer.

Thats cool, if I wasnt so lazy I'd build me some turbo headers but my car enthusiasm level is pretty low right now. Too hot out to do anything
