408 + stock 317's

has anyone made any big #'s with stock 317 heads??

i'm going to go this route jsut to get the car running again. Then upgrade the heads later on.

smok'nZ Nov 16, 2007 06:10 PM

i saw someone that had stock #317's and then got them ported

daniel6718 Nov 16, 2007 06:20 PM

ive read that around 850 is the limit...read about mightymouse latest head gaskets and his torque sequence and i think you can prolly get 900 outa them...
btw thats rwhp....
id say more than that then youll need a thicker deck head

EPP built a single turbo 408 with 317's untouched and they got about 900 rwhp out of it.

I am putting togehter a 408 with 8.5CR and lightly ported 317 heads and a 80mm front mount turbo this winter. I am not going for max effort and will mostly be a street car but should spool like a bitch and yet make some dencent enought numbers up top

black98ws6ta Nov 16, 2007 11:28 PM

Exotic performance tuned it, but it was built completely by Fast Track Performance.

A casting with a thicker deck will be able to take more cylinder pressure without lifting. I had about 30 passes on the car at 920 rwhp and when I pulled it apart it was leaking at the bottom of most cylinders. It did not cause any problems. Everyone making alot of power has pushed water at some point...just depends on how you decide to deal with it. Some race on them that way for awhile and switch them out right away. What kind of power are you wanting to make?

daniel6718 Nov 17, 2007 10:06 AM

hes going for big power....

question which ls1 castings ahve the thickest deck? i was thinkin 243 are beter than 317 because more combustion chamber more meat in there?

black98ws6ta Nov 17, 2007 10:45 AM

What's "big power"? I dont think any stock casting is better then the other, atleast not by any measureable amount, it takes a aftermarket casting.

He needs to make over 1000rwhp to meet his "goal"

black98ws6ta Nov 17, 2007 08:24 PM

I'd say he can make that power no problem, which heads and block he uses will determine how many gaskets he will need, lol.

ls1408cp Nov 23, 2007 10:45 PM

bump i am going to try a set I think goal 1100+rwhp

1_quick_ls1 Nov 23, 2007 10:50 PM

I would give them a nice port job (maybe even a hand port) and then some nice 2.02 valves and 1.57 exhaust valves, and go on down that road

Those are the parts I used. Small valves they were patriots to start with a lilntouch upnwork and a new valve job.

40 less cubes and an S88 I made over both of your power goals. Now at that power I was even pushing water on the dyno. That same amount at the track lifted both heads and put water in three cylinders.
1130 is the most I've made at 26 psi. Its the lifting the heads part that gets to you on a stock casting. I'm going with the new 1" thick deck World Heads
those and a bigger turbo and a couple new tricks for lifting the heads :jest:

will those new world heads fit on a regular 4inch bore block?

yes I was wondering the same thing I cant find much info about the bore sizes they fit

TINKRD May 30, 2008 02:09 PM

bump. any updates on people running stock 317's??

i've been trying to do research to see how much CFM they can flow stock, but cant find any. i wonder if i'll create alot of back pressure if they can't flow enough unported :dunno:

Photochop May 30, 2008 02:49 PM

I'm using a stock unported set on my build - 347 though. I'm not going for earth shattering numbers though, just a street car hoping for low 11s outta the box on 8-9 lbs, then going to a th400 /12 bolt or 9" next season or the following going for 10.0s on 14 lbs. Check out my sig for info. I'm thinking it'll do around 550ish on 8-9 lbs and maybe crack 700 on 14 eventually.

deadmanTA May 30, 2008 06:06 PM

If you plan on running over 15-16 psi I don't think I would try them because of lifting.
