Intercooler dimension questions... (98-02 F-car)
I have been asked by a second intercooler company to help them prototype a big air/air intercooler for the 98-02 F-Body.
Assuming the front bumper support is out, do most of you guys think that a 30x13.85x4.59 two row intercooler would fit in there? The actual intercooler would not be 30 inches wide, but it's 30 inches from inlet to outlet.
I am guessing that this intercooler would also fit into the noses of 93-97 cars too.

Re: Intercooler dimension questions... (98-02 F-car)
if those would be actual dimensions of the intercooler I think it would fit fine. I spent quite a while playing around in that part of the car comming up with the dimensions for mine.
Would this be flowing lateraly (side to side)? If so I don't think it would be big enough (have adequate flow capacity). If it flows verticaly I would guess it could support about 600hp, probably be adequate for more. Something Like this would be great for the both turbo and supercharger guys.

I don't follow you.
The inlet and outlet would be on different sides on opposite corners. The tanks would be on the sides not on the top and the bottom. The cores might be only about 24-25 inches wide.
The issue for us F-Body folks is that there are not that many off the shelf intercoolers available.
I was talking to a shop that used the ATI sheetmetal intercooler on a setup, and it was a restriction for them at 22psi. They had 30 lbs of boost before the intercooler.
I have a CAS intercooler right now, and it's like 3.25 x 12.5 x 24 and I might end up selling it if I do this other one (and this other one is built in 1-2 weeks).

I am planning to cut out the license plate section of the Firebird/TA bumper cover. I plan to mount either intercooler as far forward as possible. I'm concerned about the 2nd one being too wide to fit in there with our headlight assemblies so that's why I wanted to see if anyone had done any measuring on the Pontiacs.

PSJ-the pressure drop will be less if you put the tanks on the top and bottom becasue the increased number of tubes. Yes the actual intercooler core you put in would have to be a little smaller but from what I understand with intercoolers it is better to inrcrease the number of tubes rather than the length of the tubes.

My CAS intercooler has the tanks mounted on the top and bottom.
This second one is a two-row so it would have more surface area. Right now we are trying to assess whether the inlet or outlet would need to be more in the center to clear the headlight assemblies, when you factor in the piping.

Zig that would cost $1k and I don't like that look. They want a universal 'cooler anyway. I have to call them right now.

Prostock, Why dont u get one of the Intercoolers LS1motorsport using on their project car. That intercooler is supporting close to 800HP. Check LS1motorsport website and go see the silver camaro, u know under project cars. U will love that intercooler.

There's no guarantee that the 44" wide one that Currdog is running or Raymer's one will fit in the nose of the Firebird.
We'll have the nose off my car on Monday to see what can fit. Might have to play with the location of the inlet and outlet too.
Scott I'll let you know I thought you got one already.

Why don't you just figure out your core thickness and buy a some styra foam (ie home depot) in that thickness or glue two pieces to gether to get your thickness and sculpt a intercooler to make it fit then swap over to a core and end tank design. When it comes down to it Spearco just has to be told what size intercooler to produce. With the intercooler right up against the rad the engine will run hot. (been there done that don't like it) I still think it would be easier to get yourself a air-water setup and mount one like myself or bmr did, but if you are planning on this being a "street" car it won't be that great for that.

Steven I posted the question to see if folks had some ideas, but yeah the nose will be off tomorrow and the measurements taken.

thats exatly what I did and where I got it I did'nt even take the nose off the car. Worked realy well. I even bought some plastic pipe to simulate inlets and the outlet.
Worked out pretty good.
