Losses add up as you go. No amount of contraction due to cooling is going to pull a vacuum on anything. Well, not in an open system at least.
I'm running a 3" downpipe for about 3', then as soon as I have room step up to a 3.5" from there back. Losses add up quick in the 3" pipe, so you want to increase the size as soon as you can.
