exhaust temps

exhaust temps The old school guys tell me to place my sensor at least 6 in back from the collector and others say at the collector. Either way, should the temps be the same or not? Which is the best to determine the correct temp for tuning.
You should really measure about 2" from the exhaust port in the head. I realize this only measures 1 cylinder, but the collector is rather far away to get an accurate reading.
What.. 
O2, or EGT?
As Lonnie said, 2" from head. [assuming it's EGT.]
If it is, putting it at the collector is useless.
