How durable are 28 spline moser axles?
Hey I have a Mark Williams third-member. I am in the market for axle and housing for a 2000 T/a. The car is Heads/Cam/Intake/tons of nitrous car. I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with the 28 spline axles. I have spoken with Bob At EPP and he is the God of customer service! Bar-non. Thanks for any comments

Has anyone on here broke 28 or 31 spline axles, and if you have, please mention your horsepower level? Bob

I had a customer in Cali that twisted a set of 31 spline Moser axles in a 400 RWHP Camaro a few months back. Depending on how much NOS, you might consider going 35 spline and being done with it. Measure the diff bores as I believe M/W center sections are only 3.250" or 3.812" bores. No one in the aftermarket produces a differential for those bore cases.
Edited at request of Moser.

All axles that Moser Engineering manufactures are "MADE IN THE USA" They are forged locally here in Portland, Indiana (not India) with US STEEL by Teledyne Forge. They are then taken two blocks to our sister plant located across the street from Moser Engineering where they are then CNC machined and induction heat treated before being brought to us for final machining & splining. If anyone has any questions concerning our axles please contact us directly to get the truth (not the word on the street).

I think you can find the information you require at the following link.(see below)http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/axletech.html
If you need the first gear ratio of the transmission you are running, please give me the model ...th350, th400, 4l60 et. and I will provide you with the required information.
If you give me your tire diameter, transmission and rearend gear ratio I will do the math for you.
I think this will give you the answer you are looking for.

I have a set of 28 spline previous owner installed. Doing a gear swap right now and been going over them. No hint of any problems and there going back in the car. Full bolt on car so not much power.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I am thinking of ditching the 3rd member OR! OR! buying a posi unit or full spool. . . . . Any suggestions for a posi? bob? How about the stock ford tru trac? rebuilt with the goodies, this car will see the track maybe once a month. . . or less. Please let me know about the posi units

Glad to help. Keep in mind that no manufacturer's 28 spline axle is drag race legal.
You could apply up to 450 foot lbs. of torque to a pair of Moser Engineering axles with your gear ratios of choice. I won't speak to another manufacturer's axles since I am not privy to their axle specifications. I am not hawking the Moser stuff it is simply all I feel confident in applicating. I personally would go with a 31 spline axle and build in more of a safety factor. If you plan on launching with a transmission brake I would recommend a 33 spline axle and spool combination. If you have additional questions please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Sportfan! Thanks again everyone; The car will be shot from home with about 200-250 range. So with a 4l60 low first gear and converter with that much gas its as harsh if not worse as a brake on a hydro tranny. I am going to go with the 31 splines im guessing. I reckon with a spool bad as i hate to. Im just tired of breaking **** if you know what i mean. Did go 6.3's 1/8 mile with the ole' gm stocker/ 2 gun set up of coarse

The standard ford unit is the trac lok, the True Trac is not the same unit. The Detroit/Eaton True Trac is what I would go with for up to 600 rwhp, and is generally a very stout unit, although I have heard of several people on here who have broken them. The True Trac can be ordered with 31 spline axles. The Locker is an even tougher unit, but it can make the rear of the car sway when letting off and on the gas, as it locks and unlocks. Some people swear by them and others hate them. The Locker can be ordered with 35 spline axles.
A spool does not cause the rear to sway, but with both axles locked together all the time, taking tight corners will cause tire scrub. Not ideal for a city dweller, for my mostly rural driving it isn't bad at all. The spool is going to be the lightest and it also is the cheapest way to go. Bob
