i kno this is dumb but, can u count the bolts on the cover to determine wht rearend is in your car?

^^^ Yes thats pretty much what refers to it as a "10 bolt" or a "12 bolt".

When you weld axle tubes, does it get hot enough to affect anything inside?

Save up money and get 12 bolt or 9'. Waste of money putting into 10 bolt. If you get aftermarket rear...you can launch and not worry about anything going POW! lol

It's actually the number of bolts that fasten the ring gear to the carrier.

Yes, unlike the ford 9" or 8.8, Chevy rear ends are referred to by the bolts, not the size. A 12 bolt is 8.875" and a 10 bolt is 7.625 (7.5 for older 3rd gens). I think a Dana 60 is 9 3/4"

You have to remove everything because ash will form inside so when your done, then it needs to be cleaned out and reassemble everything. Or the perfect when replacing the axles, etc.

Can that be done with an arc welder, or do you need to use a special (MIG/TIG) welder?

I have my 10 bolt out right now there some pics or anything so i can tell my welder what i need him to do?

just run a bead around each tube.

as do the 12 bolts (12 bolt ring gear and 12 bolt cover)
