Default Moser 9" gear noise advice please!!

Hey all, I just finished installing a Moser 9", Tru-trac posi, 4.11 gears, 31 spline axles, weld-in LCA relocation brackets, c-clip eliminators, and aluminum center section(just so you know what im working with), and I am experiencing a fairly good amount of gear noise, both speeding up and idling down. My 10 bolt was whining only on idling down before it failed. What can I do to fix this, or is this "normal" for a performance rear end? I've been hearing that "some" noise is to be expected, but how much is normal, how do i know if it is too much or a bad sound?

Was it installed as received from Moser or was it taken apart to check the pattern before installation?

It was installed as is. Had a guy at napa check the backlash while he was pressing on my bearings and installing new u-joints, he said it was .009, which was fine for the band i called and got from moser (.008 - .012). I've heard something about a yoke or pinion(cant remember) adjustment; can it fix the whine?

Is your whine on acceleration or decel? I was told in the past that a tight backlash of .008/.009 would cause some decel whine?? The wider the lash the quieter but not great for launching?

Do you have a picture of the pattern on the gear? Using yellow gear compound on at least 4 of the teeth to get a good picture of the pattern.

It's already installed.. so i need to drop it back out and open up the housing? Could that wait until the 500 mile mark, or could that cause irreversible damage?

The first thing to do is to jack up the car from the rear-end, or drive the car on to a drive on 4 post lift (so the suspension is loaded) and look to make sure the torque arm mounting bracket on the Moser rear is not rubbing the sheetmetal of the floor. If the sheetmetal is touching the rear, it will transfer a lot of noise. A pry bar and some gentle nudging is generally all that it normally takes to move the offending sheetmetal. You also want to make sure the torque arm pinion angle is within range. We normally shoot for a -1 to -2 with the rear loaded.

It is is indeed the gears, chances are that it was assembled correctly and you just happened to get a st of gears that are louder than most. It does happen, you can have to sets of gears that have an identical pattern, and one can be quiet and the other one loud. In this case the only thing you can do is to remove the center section and send it back in to get another set of gears installed. Bob

I had the same problem with my 9"......It was brand new and was loud! Turns out the gears were defective and Moser replaced them for free.....now it is almost silent

My Moser 9" has a slight whine to it, but is a ton better than how my 10 bolt sounded. ha

Mine doesn't whine at all. When I installed my moser 9" I notice just by feel that my 9" gear set had more backlash than my noisey 10bollt.

I would say the noise is normal for performance gearsets. The clunk you described is pretty normal for a locker. Bob

IONO, the decel noise might be a preload problem on the pinion bearings. Lockers clunk and make all kinds of noises. can sound like the rearend is gonna fall out(totally normal).

When I changed out the spider gears on my wrangler I replaced the pinion seal as well. Torqued the nut down incorrectly and experienced a growling noise when driving. I backed the nut off and retorqued following the correct spec and it took care of the problem.
