All depends how it breaks. Most likely it would brake in a launch or hard shift and it would just stop moving. If however you snapped an axle and launched a wheel off the car it could be ugly. But More than likely you will not wreck your car because of it.

I could be wrong but wont the c-clips hold the axle in? And to the OP I doubt very much it would lock up on you. I'm thinking you'd have to seize it pretty good for that to happen without any warning, i,e freak accident. And like dsch said it'll probably be on a launch or shift.

c clips will not hold the axle in if it breaks. That is why you need c clip eliminators and 9" and 12bolts don't use c clips

You stop moving ... Seriously though, it won't seize up on you and lock up your tires if that's what your thinking...

A. The C-clip hold the entire axle in at the diff. If the axle was to break say half way in the tube the outter part of the axle will slide out.
Most of the time it will break from a launch. You will hear a BIG BIG boom the car will normally shake like a earth quake and then coast to a stop.
While driving if it broke I would think the momentum of teh car would grind down any part that broke. Then make all sorts of noise. Buddy snapped the spider gears from launching a 1500 truck. The axle was ground down and so was the cross pin. I have some pics of it.

I've heard of a few guys that had it lock up while they were getting on it and they ended up wrecking.

When mine broke at about 40mph the posi and gears tried to come out the back and ended up sawing a hole in the cover. It was still driveable though and although it wasn't a good idea I drove it about 10 miles to my buddy's house. It did lock up at one point though when the bolt head that had snapped off got stuck in between the ring and pinion. Surprisingly the gears chewed up the bolt head though.

When Mine blew in 03, I was driving, cruising actually at about 35 when a bolt backed out of the ring gear, an caught the case, it sawed through the cast iron housing, then out the cover..... locked the wheels up and I slid to a stop...not fun....

I stand corrected, you can lock it up, and it would really suck. ^^ That one is nasty...

LOUD NOISES!!! it will probably break on a launch or a first second shift. just keep the thought of it breaking in the back of your mind so you can still have fun driving the car.

even if you break an axle wont the calipers hold disks and keep the axle in the car?

These are VERY rare...
Mine broke last month power shifting 3rd at the track NOT on the launch. Haven't popped the cover off yet..pretty sure i broke some teeth off and the ring and pinion as well. Fab 9' dumdumdum!

Thats what mine did when I broke the left axle on a launch. It chewed up the rotor and the caliper but it did not go flying off into the stands....The axle broke off right at the end of the splines. The car lurched forward and made a hell of a loud noise. It was a bad day at the track.....

Mine broke a bolt loose got caught in the gear and locked the rear end up at 65MPH on the turnpike, threw my *** into a ditch, thankfully nothing happened to the car, I was 400miles from home when it happened so it cost me a **** ton to get the car back to the house.

thats what I thought. so no worries about the axle breaking and coming out of the end of the housing if you have disk brakes. Only gotta hope it breaks the right way and doesnt lock up.

Well. I was driving on the highway just cruising. Humming noises started to happen. Got louder and louder. Evetualling some clucking noises started and as I was getting close to home, I started feeling some jerking and very loud cluckings. Only 10 KM's from start to fisnish and this was the result.
