Does it have stock 3.42's? My car has always made a little bit of gear noise (barely audible when the stereo is off)...which is more than my previous cars made...and mine is also a 2000 6 speed Z28...but if it helps ease your mind any, I noticed it when I got the car with 86,700 miles on it...and it's got 153,000 on it now, and the noise hasn't gotten any worse (or better) and I really don't even notice it now unless I think to listen for it...and nobody else has ever commented on it. Whats the last 6 numbers (sequence off the assembly line) in your VIN? Maybe your car and mine were built on the same day/week and had the gears setup the same way. Mine is 155607 (a late Y2K model).

The M6 is a bit harder on the drivetrain than the automatic. Add that to the fact that you got the car used and the fact not many people can resist putting the **** to them, and yeah, you are probably in for a rear end shellout. Its probably one of the weakest links in these cars. You'll have wanted to replace it with a 9" or 12bolt anyhow.

Idk if I would worry yet my 10 bolt is whisper quiet and that was when my gears were eaten up a bit. Now after a rebuild its still pretty quit slight noise between 20-30. My buddy has a 98 z28 auto with 55k on it the damn thing whines on accel and decel took it apart changed the oil no difference.
