How do you like the 3.42's? I want to replace my 2.73's with them.

What kind of highway mileage do you get, and what is your RPM at 70mph?

I DD mine and do alot of highway driving, so I'm worried about killing the mileage.

And what did you have before the 3.42's, since those aren't the stock A4 gear. Were they a big improvement?

Thanks!

So you lose 1/2 mpg and gain 200 rpm for any given speed. . . .

Put it in and get over it

I believe stock was 3.23.I switched them out in '98' and noticed a slight increase. At the time there was not any other performance mods on the aftermarket scene yet. After the headers went in and all the other mods were done it pulls just fine.I was just asking if it would be worth wild to upgrade to 3.73s since I could pick a set real cheap. But I do like em.Great in city and quiet on highway.I guess if I had an M6 I go with an 3.73.

Why would you do that? M6 should have 4:10s. Period. I'd go with the 3:73 in the auto. Friend of mine had them in his LT1 A4 and they were lots of fun.

do 4.10's. (assuming your car is a manual) you won't regret it. my buddy has them in his stock 98 ss M6. It makes me envious, even though i'm a full second faster (A4)

EDIT: 3.73's for autos. They will scoot down the track. tons of fun around town also

When my car was an auto, I went from 2.73s to 3.42s. I picked up a MPG or two around town and lost 3 -4 on the highway. I ended up getting a different job, 40 miles farther out and was kicking myself for switching. It was more for the annoying RPMs than anything. It WAS a shitload snappier though, first REALLY kicked ***. If you really do a lot of highway driving, keep your 2.73s and do a nice 3200 Vig or Yank instead. Then you get the best of both worlds. That's what I wish I had done. I finally did the very best thing and dropped in a T56 - haven't looked back.

I'd keep the 3.42s. I swapped from 2.73s to 3.73s in mine and I'm happy unless it's on the highway. I just drove from Mississippi to Pennsylvania, so we've got a lot of time together. The 3.42s are a happy medium between low and high.

I went with 3.50s when I swapped to a Moser 9".

It will still pull a mid 1.4 with bolt-ons, minor suspension mods, and a small shot.

Depends on your tire height and how much u drive your car on the highway. I have 3.42's, with 26-29" tires depending on the day. Fuel mileage with either seems to be the same, will be stepping up to 3.73 or 4.10's soon though. I have come to realize that my car will be a gas guzzler regardless so i might as well get a gear to maximize my setup.
