Default Don't Plan on Drag Racing

I don't plan on drag racing any time soon, I have an M6 94 T/A. I do however; plan on auto-x. Should I be worried about breaking the rear? I never plan on doing clutch dumps.

I mean don't cross it off your mod list, but it's safe to say you can push it back a little bit, unless you are launching mad hard off the line.

What I'm hearing is put a hold on the autocross until I have enough for a 9"/12-bolt. It's my daily driver and I commute 20+ miles a day to class and work.

You shouldn't be racing a daily driver. A little fun isn't worth the headaches involved when it breaks.

Sound advice. I'm finding myself coming to that same conclusion... sigh.

I'm shocked people are telling you not to. I've got 100k miles on my daily driven TA and I autox it. It's auto so it's easier on the rear, but there's plenty of people running m6's with no issues. I will absolutely never even consider spending $2k on a rear for fear of breaking it in a parking lot dodging cones or on a road course. Anyone who tells you that you need to spend that amount of money right off the bat for an autox above all else has no idea what they're talking about. First of all, you'll probably be on street tires the first few times. Plus you said you won't dump the clutch. A few mild launches will be absolutely fine in a stock geared, stock powered car on parking lot grade pavement. This isn't a 400hp car on a prepped track surface with 4.11's and drag radials.

I say go for it. Autox is the cheapest form of racing and really won't hurt your car in any way apart from a little tire wear and maybe the power steering pump and little things like brakes after many many events. Even if by some chance the rear blows, it's not a tough job to swap one in a driveway with basic tools. Takes a few hours but you can pick them up for around $150 nowadays.

In that case I'll check the prices around hear for rear-ends. If I can afford it, I'll pick up the sport.

honestly i would not worry about your rear at all. just don't dump the clutch and it'll be fine. do a few events stock or however your car is set up to get a feel for the car and see if you like it. stock is the best way to learn. after that look into some suspension/brakes if you have the money and maybe a dedicated set of tires if you're really serious. your daily tires might get a little chewed up on the edges but it's nothing major. nothing is going to break on you unless it's on the verge of breaking already.

i will warn you though, it's addicting. i started doing suspension after my first event and couldn't stop. the only stock pieces left are the k-member and front a-arms. and that's only because i don't have the money haha. go have fun with it.
