Default Which Carrier?

I have a 93 Z28 that came factory with 3.23 gears, currently the car has 3.73 gears in it and in combination with the transmission it's killing my mileage, not to mention my speedometer is way off. I plan on going back to 3.23 and gaining my fuel mileage back, I don't spend enough time at a track to justify them in there.
My question is which carrier do I have, assuming the factory one still in the car that is and the previous owner just changed the gears? I've heard some people say it's going to have a Series 2 and others say a Series 3, is there anyway to tell?
I've also read that gears for a series 3 can fit on a series 2 carrier with some spacers? Please educate me.

I beleave so allso.

3.08 and lower(ie:3.00, 2.73) are seires 2, you may buy a thick plate to allow the thin ring to work or buy a special set which has a thick ring gear
