Default Which rear end for third gen??

Ok so I've got a 92 RS I'm puttin LS1 and t56 in. I want to get away from my drum, single track rear end. Are there any rear ends GM made from the factory that would handle an LS1 and have disc brakes for the third gens? I think I read some where that the rear ends that were put in the Iroc's were decent. Or should I not even waste my time and just buy a 9" moser with auburn, and 31 spline axles?

P.S., want to stay away from the fourth gen rear ends becuase I just recently bought new zr1's with the correct offset for the car.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

you could try to find a 9bolt borg warner from the 80's. most have disk brakes, but were poor design. rears and parts for the 9bolt's are harder to find, plus they may have a differnent width than your current "1 tire fryer", but not the same as 4th gen either. don't think they were strong enough for what you want. you may have gotten your cart in front of your horse by getting the zr1's already. you may just want to do the 9" and have it finished. if your car didn't originally have the 9bolt, you may have the same thing we have with a 10bolt.

you could however just buy a powertraxx ratcheting locker for your current open diff until you figure out what you want.

you can find a dana 44 that were replacements in third gens or buy a 12 bolt, 9" or S60. I have an S60 with 93-97 rear disc brakes.

You can order a Moser 9 inch with the correct width for your 3rd gen. You won't be able to reuse your stock brakes, 4th gen brakes are usually what people end up using. I would show you a link to this rear on my website, but the website will be down for approx one day.

I recommend the 9 inch rear for the higher horsepowered cars, and for those who have a manual transmission. Here is why.
Put a 12 bolt into a early Chevelle, Nova, Camaro, etc and you can beat the crap out of it, and not hurt anything. Put one into one of our cars with a torque arm, make a couple 4000 to 5000 dragstrip launches, and I can just about guarantee you'll pick up gear noise. If it is a drag only car, you'll never know or care about the gear noise. Drive your car home from the track, and the noise will drive you nuts. I feel the torque arm stresses the 12 bolt housing, causing distortion. We have never seen this happen with the 9 inch housing.

Call us at 260 244-4808, or order the Moser rear of your choice from our website. Rear ends are ready to ship two days after order is received, allow added time if rear is to be powdercoated. Thanks! Bob

Unless you plan on taking the car to the track and using slicks, a stock 9 or 10 bolt thirdgen rear with posi, discs, and 3.42-4.10 ratio will work well with what you have. You should be able to find a nice used one for a few hundred.

Thanks for all the input guys, I ended up going with a Moser 9" housing and 31 spline axles, Strange engineering center section with trutrac diff, 4.11's and 98-02 LS1 brakes. And powder coated black.
