SS vs v6 rear end

i just got my v6 camaro back from getting transformed. had a 5.3 put in it with the t56 and all the good stuff to make it work . But now i need to know what i need to change out in the rear end ????

madmike9396 04-17-2010 06:42 PM

Just get u a welder and weld that rear end up till u kill it and then get u a new one like a 9" or moser 12 bolt

Big Black SS 04-17-2010 06:47 PM

what u mean weld it ?

madmike9396 04-17-2010 06:58 PM

well if u weld the rear it acts like a positive rear end but it will be positive all the time like a spool would be, its a cheap way to have the rear end act like a positive

madmike9396 04-17-2010 07:07 PM

here is a pic of a welded rear end, Weld the spider gears together so nothing slips :drive:

Won't that cause the rear to break? That's what I was told, because when you turn the wheel normally turn at different speeds. I wouldn't do that unless it's a daily driver.

madmike9396 04-17-2010 07:25 PM

if its not a DD i would if i wanted a quick positive, my friend done it to his stock mustang rear end and made god knows how many 9.20 passes in the 1/4 with it and had no problems at all

Big Black SS 04-17-2010 07:29 PM

it is my daily driver, the 5.3 has mild comp cam, patriot springs&retainers,ls6 intake ,bigger injecters, ported oil pump, and tune .so if i decide not to weld it ,can i just purchase better gears

bww3588 04-17-2010 07:31 PM

to the question at hand....a V6 rear end is typically a 3.08 open diff. the V8 rear ends are either depending on transmission and trim level.....2.73 or 3.23 (auto) 3.42 (M6) all with LSD's.

just an FYI. yes welding the spiders is cheep on the quick, but it considerably weakens the carrier.

madmike9396 04-17-2010 07:34 PM

yeah u could but if its a v6 rear end its just a single traction and u will deffinatly need a positive traction so u would need to get a positive traction unless u just want to spin all day lol

Big Black SS 04-17-2010 07:36 PM

so whats the best thing i should do ? besides buying a new one , i just dropped almost $3,000 on the swap and labor and now my pockets are a lil dusty.....

BIG difference between a 8.8 and a fbody 10 bolt though........

OP, If I were you, I wouldnt do it if its your daily driver, your just setting yourself up for failure. Its to weak of a rearend in the first place, you just got the warmed over 5.3/t56, which means (at least for me :drive:) youll be beatin on it like a 8th grader at a booby bar........... It'll end up grenadin on ya and leave ya stranded. If I were you, I would 1.) find another 10 bolt before you weld that one 2.) Weld it and find another ride to and from wherever you have to go...........

Just my $.02............

madmike9396 04-17-2010 08:12 PM

Just call local junk yards and c if they have any wrecked SS Z28 TRANS AM they all should have positive rear ends, get it and swap it with yours, if u want the cheap way out weld it but like said above it may break, If i were u i would weld it if i had another Daily Driver but if i didnt have another Daily Driver i would leave the rear the way it is and save for a 9" or a 12 bolt because all 7.5 rears are weak in these cars and will not with stand your power soure long especially if it hooks one good time

Best advice of the thread so far:

1.) Find another 10 bolt locally or on here in the classifieds, buy it, and have it sitting on the garage floor ready to go in.

2.) Pull the car in, jack it up. Pull the diff cover, clean the carrier out real good w/a couple cans of brake cleaner. Wipe as much of the gear oil out and let it drip dry. Once dry, weld that fucker up (like the one in the pics above)............ just remember, your gonna have to get the center pin out somehow :bang:.......... fill er back up with some of the cheapest gear oil you could find and throw the cover back on. Doesnt do any good to dig in your "dusty pockets" to put fancy shit in right now, youll see why in a minute.......in fact, leave the floor jack/tools out too

3.) Get your buddy w/the camera to start making his way to the end of the driveway............. pull out, make sure your buddy has the camera rollin, tach her up, and LET HER RIP!!!!! JAM 2nd, but be ready to come off the gas, NOW that its makin a bunch of bad noises try to get her back in the drive way........If it wont go under its own power, well its all good cause the camera crew is standin right there in awe, theyll help ya push- :wavey:

4.) Jack her back up, and get the camera under there for when you pull the cover off............. Post up vid on LS1tech to show everyone what happens when you weld a 10 bolt rear and jam gears with it :headbang:

5.) Swap the rearend

6.) Stand back and have a couple cold ones

Okay, V6 guy stepping in here.

First off, find out what rear end it has. Look at your RPO door codes and you should be able to determine from this little list:

GU4 - 3.08 Gear ratio
GU5 - 3.23 Gear Ratio
GU6 - 3.42 Gear Ratio
G80 - Limited Slip

I've got an uncommon option in the V6's which was 3.42's and LSD in a non sports package (W68/RS/Y87) car.

wadelieck 04-17-2010 10:13 PM

This is a pay now or pay later deal both 8.8 and 10 bolt are just and you guys know it

Big Black SS 04-18-2010 12:34 AM

door says ,GU5 - 3.23 Gear Ratio.......guess ill start looking for SS,z28 rear end....

Big Black SS 05-31-2010 07:06 PM

do i have to replace the whole rear end? or can i make it a lsd with some 4:10's in it with the v6 rear end housing
