Default M6 + 4.10's?? love/hate?

I know this gears thing gets beat into the ground quite frequently in our world but I'm wondering how many of you have 4.10's in a 6 speed and how many love it (how long have you had this setup) and how many hate it (How long have you had this setup.

I'll throw a poll up just for *****..

Wondering if it will be too much. Some say yes and others say it's just right. It's either the 4.10's or I'm going 3.90's. This isn't a drag car, it sees the track every once in a while, but not often. heads and cam, I know it needs gears, but not too much. I think 3.90's would be ideal, but I don't want to over-gear this cam. This is not a DD, also. It sees a lot of garage time.

The reason I ask how long have you have them is because most LOVE crazy mods at first and get tired of it after a couple months to a year. Like anyone who has a stupid loud exhaust LOVES it at first but after eight months of daily driving it and the drone on the highway, they start to get tired of it. That kind of thing.

Hope you have some grippy tires! Its a lot of fun, sometimes I miss my 4.10s. I killed my 10 bolt at the track with 4.10s, for some reason the pinion nut came loose and I chipped one tooth on the pinion. Suckers were mikronited too! Oh well. I had crap tires though, 2-3 shift the car would get loose.

Love my 4.10s. Drove a car really similar to mine, except for the clutch and gears (3.42s vs my 4.10s) and couldn't stand it. What I don't like is that the gears are in - a 10-bolt. I'm lucky in that I've driven my car with 4.10s and a 10-bolt for about 4 years now without destroying the axle, but given the chance to do it again, I'd put the money towards a 9" with 4.10s.

^ Yeah, I'd love to dump money into a 12b, but I don't have it right now.. Yeah yeah, the money spent for gears and install will half pay for a new rear end... But my 10b is still original. I don't like how it hesitates a little in the lower gears but once it gets up past 2500 it rips. I've got NT05's on it now and they hold pretty good. It used to break loose from a 60 roll in 3rd if I wasn't careful and on a crappy road (Old GS-D3's)... And a 35 sidewall doesn't help either, but anyway......... Mild cam "chug" in low 1st gear, so yeah, it needs it.

I FINALLY pushed my buddy into doing 4.11's in his Fox Stang a couple months back and that REALLY woke that car up. I can't imagine mine with gears.. But we also found a bent DS and a bent axle on his from a vibration we were tracking down too.. Stang boys love beating the **** outta those poor cars.

I'd like to hear more opinions myself. I'm torn between the 3.73's or 3.90's. Mine is a DD with some road racing thrown in and out of the corners it needs more gear. H&C also and the 3.42's take too long to get into the powerband.

I think the 3.90's would be the ticket. I read the horror stories of gear whine though and can't decide if it's worth the risk and which gears (brand) would be the best. I guess if it's 3.90's we're down to just motive brand for a choice?

Decently sticky tires + 4.10 10-bolt + hard launch = dead axle. The very first time I put a hard launch on the 10-bolt with BFG DRs, it started screaming like a banshee and hasn't stopped since.

As much as it sucks to save longer, once you break to 10-bolt, you'll already be out the price of gears + install that could have gone towards a 12-bolt or 9", plus the annoyance of having a car with a fragged rear that won't move (not a huge deal if you can swap the axle yourself, but it could be a pain in the *** if you plan on having a shop do it).

I have used 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 gears. I ran the 4.10s for 50,000 miles (2 years) but got tired of them...car very seldom went to the track but I had a big cam in at the time and the car ran better with the 4.10 gears...I went to a different cam I went with 3.73 gears (1 year 27,000 miles) and they were the best to me..kind of like the best of both worlds..now I am back to the 3.42 gears ... unless your going to the track all the time I would not use the 4.10s. If you put sticky tires on any of these gears in a 10 bolt you break it for sure. A 9 inch, or a S60 will be the best way to go.

4.10s make a lot of difference in first through fifth, but once in sixth there is is not that much difference. They are great for an M6.

3.42 gears @ 2000 RPMs = 90 MPH

3.73 gears @ 2000 RPMs = 80 MPH

4.10 gears @ 2000 RPMs = 70 MPH

I asked Slowhawk this a while ago (Owns a speed shop in Mass also a member here) I asked him if the 3.73's form 3.43's would make a difference and his answer was to the tone of "In the 1/4 mi, yes.... Butt dyno? No.." That pretty much threw the 3.73 idea out the window for me.. There was a thing on the NEFBA boards for MONTHS, it seems, that EVERY TIME I logged in they were arguing about which gears to go with....

At your power level it would be tough to get 4.10's to last in a 10-bolt. Many guys break them even on a hard shift. I really like mine but I am constantly worried about breaking them, especially at the track.

I've been running 4.10's (12 bolt) and 4.11's (9") for the last 4 years and love them. They will aid you in killing your 10 bolt though, so don't plan on it lasting a long time. If you're going to get a new rear axle, go ahead and go 9" and call it a day. It's stronger, parts are cheaper, and it's a heck of a lot easier to work on.

No experience with 4.10s here. However, I've heard so much positive feedback about 4.10s with T56s that just yesterday I ordered a S60 with 4.10s. I hope I made the right choice!

Hey Bayer this is (smokinss on NEFBA) I love my 4.11s in my 9 inch. I had 4.10s in the 10 bolt and had the rear rebuilt 2 times and it didnt matter they would always seem to howel after a few good passes with drag radials. Now Ive got the 9 inch and leave at 6600rpm with slicks and that rear doesnt make a noise. Just food for thought. You might want to start saving for a good rear. And like you my SS doesnt see the street but a couple times a week.

I've been in a 410 geared car and the pull was intense. I plan to upgrade mine to 410 when I upgrade my whole rear. I think its the smarter choice.

I'll be doing 4.11s with a DR that it 26" for the street and a 28" slick for the track. Going to have about 660rwhp N/A and about 900rwhp on spray. But then again my first gear is 2.66.
