Default C-clip removal questions

I've done this before many moons ago on a 12 bolt in my chevelle. Now with the 10 bolt I am having difficulties....
Is there any other way to get the axle to move inward other than beating the end of it with a hammer and piece of wood??? It seems that it's really tight and no way for clearance to remove that dang little C clip...
Any help is appreciated.

If you have a 4 channel rear you will have TCS sensors at each wheel. The sensors need to be removed from the backing plate with a 10mm socket before the axle will slide inward enough to remove the C clip.
