9 bolts are stronger then 10 bolts in the 3rd gens. It actually has a bigger ring gear comparted to a 10 bolt - 7 7/8" vs. 7 1/2" or 7 5/8". A 12 bolt has an 8 7/8" ring gear. That's why a 12 bolt is comparable to a 9" - 1/8" difference. I don't think there are as many aftermarket parts for them as a 10 or 12 bolt because there weren't as many of them produced. I have one in my 87 Bird and haven't seen many gearsets or axles listed anywhere.
