Default Shops in My Area Say Stock 10 Bolt Can Be Beefed

Like many, I think $2300+ for a built rear is insane. I ran into a guy at an auto salvage yard who specializes in building/installing rears, trannys, and suspensions. He is an old time drag racer too.

He overheard me asking the clerk about any 9" rears in the yard. They didn't have any, so this guy asks me what I'm looking to do. I told him about the 10 bolt POS I'm trying to swap so I can take my car to the track.

He says I can upgrade the components to make the rear much stronger for dead hooking and strip racing. I doubted him. So he referred me to this guy in Miami (Murrray Racing?) who is a major supplier of suspensions, rear ends, etc.

So I called the guy and told him of my set up and my goals. He says that we can surely help me out with a stronger posi, spider gears and near-bullet proof axles. Now I will freely admit I am not knowledgeable in the rear end area (except females) so I welcome your opinion. I have the guys number if anyone wants to call or confirm. By the way, he said I could accomplish this by spending $1300.00.

The guy was super nice to talk to over the phone, and was very confident that this upgrade would help me greatly.

that is taking 1300 dollars and throwing it in the trash. he is wrong and trying to sell you his services. the ring and pinion will chatter if the axles dont stress out first.

Figured so. If it sounds too good to be true, than it is....

Will my TA cover allow me (for a while) to get down the strip (with Nittos) without making hamburger out of the pumpkin? I want at least break into the high 11's.

Some have, some haven't. I wouldn't count on the T/A cover adding any strength really, but that is just my opinion.

There is aonly so much improving you can do,unfortunately the weakness resides in the design.

The 7.5 ring is small & you can only do so much.
It won't be enough, 'specially a M-6 car + if your makin' power , it will go boom.
You have to go with a larger ring size.
Thats why a whole new housing is required.
So get a 12 bolt or 9" & piece of mind.
Just like gator said , dont waste your money.

It's a toss up. I know one guy (Ws6 m6) that made a ton of 5k launches (et streets) on the stock 3.42, with the T/A cover. It was a heads/cam car that ran mid 11's. After a year or so of launching on the stock 7.5" 10 bolt it finally went boom. The crazy thing is, the boom was only a broken axle , the ring and pinion gears were fine. But he decided to upgrade to the 12 bolt after that. So, a few passes won't hurt

I wouldnt go to Murrays for anything...Sorry. Just too mainstream of a shop to know what they're doing with late models.

I dont see why you couldnt modify a 8.5" 10bolt to work though. Thoughts?

Ive seen some people down here in Texas that have been runing slicks on their 10 bolt, going on 2 years. I curently run on nittos and spray 150 shoot 30 feet out. I know its going to end up breaking but till it does, Drive it like its hot.

I will say that my "built" 10 bolt in my thirdgen was bullet proof, auburn posi 4:10 gears (dont remember the brand) Live through lots and lots of low 12s on slicks and a few 10s on slicks. It might not of lived behind a stick but ill never know. I do know my mostly stock firehawks rearend isnt very happy right now and will be getting replaced over the winter.

axle tubes will start bending with too many hard launches with slicks not to mention gears breaking with the stress . friend of mine has ta cover with sportman pros no problems so far.

Thanks guys for the input. I guess I'll run it til it breaks, but I don't want to have to tow it back from the strip, that money can be applied to the new 12 bolt or 9".

(Me, standing among the panhandlers on the medians with an empty Big Gulp cup....)

"Need 12 Bolt.
God Bless."

Has anybody ever tried having their gears cryogenically frozen? I think NASCAR does this- I wonder how much power a 10 bolt could withstand if the gears had been cryogenically frozen. Anybody wanna venture a guess?

It doesn't matter what you do, the gears themselves will always be a weakness. 7.5' 4:10's are TINY, and WILL break..

I did hear that NASCAR ring/pinions go through this. I wonder if there's a cryogenic 2 for 1 plan.

First my gears; second-my head.

Guy is probably thinking that we have the 8.5 10 bolt, well we don't.

Don't put big money into a 10 bolt unless you are a road racer with stock gears.
