Hi everyone,

I was wondering whats the difference between 2 and 3 series gears. Thunder Racing has them and im going to put 3.73 gears in my 2001 WS6 so whats the better buy and whats the difference any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There have been issue in the past with old g body and s 10 pickups when swapping gears due to carrier sizes gears for our rear ends are listed as 7 1/2 and 7 5/8 the size of. The carriers are a lil different basicly if I'm wrong correct me. But if your car came with a 2 series carrier you can put 3 series carier gears in but not vice versa I could be wrong its been along time since I read anything about this and I'm a lil foggy on the subject

I do believe you should have posted this in the gears and retrain section of the forum also if you call thunder racing and talk to someone tell them what gear you have now I'm sure they will hook you up with what you need

I bought mine from advanced auto parts my formy has motive 3.73 gears and my bird has a 6 speed rear but calling under racing would be your best bet

Thanx man, Im new to this site. My friend got me on this and so fare its been really helpfull but yea i have the stock rearend and ima just have to call thunder racing the gears are cheaper than I thought

You have series 3 gears, either 3.23s or 3.42s, so stick series 3 and get 4.10s for your 6speed.

Automatics came with either 2.73s'(with a steel driveshaft) on a 2 series carrier or 3.23s'(with an aluminum driveshaft) on a 3 series carrier.
6 speeds came with 3.42s' on a 3 series carrier.

7.5 is the same as 7.625.
a 7.625 rearend has a 7.625 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
a 7.5 rearend has a 7.5 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
rearend parts are the same: bearings,seals,shims,etc.

A 2 series gear can't be used with a 3 series carrier,too thick.
'Thick' gears are available in 3.42,3.73,4.10 to use on a 2 series carrier.

3 series gears for use on a 3 series carrier are available in ratios of 3.23,3.42,3.73,3.90(not widely available),4.10,4.30(not widely available),4.56.
