depending on mileage, I would get the master rebuild kit with bearing and seals. a T/A cover with stud kit might not be a bad idea.

You'll need a new differential (aka carrier) too, 2.73s use a 2 series, 3.73s use a 3 series.
Or another option would be to find "thick" 3.73s that work with a 2 series carrier.

you sure they are 2:73?
and I'll do the rear for you, dont go anyplace!!

do it right, get a slp take off zexel so your starting fresh, and a gear install kit. Dunno bout that TA girdle, thats good for looks. ;) but if you can get one cheap go for it. looks cool easier to change gear oil i spose.

if you have traction control you don't need a reluctor wheel.

if the dude above is good (go for a ride in his car, should be deadly silent at all speeds) then take him up on the offer. Gear whine and broken gears = incompetent installer or poor parts.

I could have gotten the 3.42 for 2 series carrier, but i figured a fresh zexel instead of whatever they put in the 2.73 cars was a good idea, didn't want peg-leg burnouts.

im good. My gears are not silent. Im running thin cut gears with a spool! it is a little loud. My old set up was perfect tho.

Some gear whine isn't due to the installer or bad parts.

Richmond gears tend to be a little noiser than most due to their material/cut.

Also, reverse cut gears are VERY noisy. But these are only really used in front axles.

Just wanted to clarify- of course these are exceptions.

Also- doesn't Richmond make a 3.73 for a II series carrier?

the spool is prt of the loudnes. full spool with richmond thin cuts on the street with a lightweight carpet. it isnt do to install.

but yes, back lash and so on is big in gear install.

Measure twice...install once :)

you will need a reluctor gear if going from a 2 series to a 3 series. it is for the ABS not the TCS

samz28 Mar 20, 2004 07:14 PM

tcs/asr cars have sensors on the axles. non-tcs/asr car do not.

JGKadell Mar 20, 2004 08:04 PM

I am referring to the reluctor gear that presses onto the carrier for the ABS. I installed gears in my 2.73 car without traction control

RevGTO Mar 20, 2004 10:19 PM

So is Sam Z28. The wheel IS for ABS. But if you have traction control, there is no wheel on the carrier because there is one on each axle. Like you, I just did the swap on a non-TCS car and had to get the wheel for the 3 series carrier.
