Some more questions on an 8.8 swap. I searched first.
I plan on going to the junk yard this weekend to find a 8.8 and a 10 bolt axle to marry together. I like the sounds of getting a Ranger axle because my stock axles will slide right in and the 10 bolt axle tubes can be machined down to be a tight fit. I found the Ranger Station FAQ telling how to read an axle and what trucks the axles came in.
I read the 28 spline carrier can be changed out at a later date for the 31 spline carrier. At which point Moser will machine new axles for around $400. Just want someone to confirm this, answers I read seemed to conflict.
What passenger cars came with the 8.8 w/ limited slip and a 3.73 or 4.10? I am hoping to take a list with me on Saturday to the scrap yard to make the hunt easier.
My Camaro is a 2002 Z28 w/ the M6, ABS, and Traction control. I want everything to function correctly. I want to pull an axle from a Camaro to use for this. What years can I pull from and what do I need to look for on said cars? I read a 3 channel axle can be used but I have to install my axles and mount the sensors in the backing plates. Does this apply for all 4th gen Camaros or only 98-02? V6 cars fair game too, or just V8s?
And the dreaded TA mount. The consensus seems to be a hiltsy mount with an aftermarket TA. Any other good options out there? I do not want to weld to the housing.
Thanks guys.

Hiltsy mount is the way to go. Just find a capable welder that can do the job. If you want an aftermarket TA send me a PM. I have a UMI TA that was trimmed for the Hiltsy mount, but I decided to go with a MWC rear axle package.
I'm pretty sure that Moser will make the axles for you, but I'm sorry I don't know for sure.

Moser will make axles for you. If I were you id get a diff out of an explorer or truck as they are 31 sline units. Spend about $100 on carbon fiber clutch rebuild kit and some new axles and you are good ta go for long time. Happy picking

WHAT?! Where are you going that they'll let you walk out the door with 1 1/2 axles for $110? Average price I've seen for just the explorer rear around here is $250ish. And you got 4.10s too. Man, you're set!

I was talking with the old machinist at work and he was very hesitant to make me a pair of sleeves or an alignment bar for welding the 10 bolt tubes into the 8.8 center section. He is convinced I am doomed to leaking axles seals and many sets of bearings due to misalignment issues. So how many of you out there have 8.8s with the 10 bolt tubes welded in with some mileage on them?
How much clearance between the sleeves and tubes?
Did you use a truing bar and how did you make the truing bar?

I'm having a bar made and it should be finished this week. I beleive 63 and 1/4 or something like that is what I came up with on my overall length, end to end on my 10'bolt. I really don't remember though. My notes are at work.
What I did was measured the overall length and added 12 inches to that.( 6 inch for both sides) the bar will be able to slide through the housing with minimal clearence to the axle end bearing. Then I had a bushing made the same size as 8.8 main bearing that will fit the 8.8 main caps with a hole machines for the bar to slide through. This will hold center from the main caps to the housing end. Then I'm having two more pieces machined with a slight tapper or cone shape that will also fit over the bar with minamal clearence but the cone will fit into the axle tube to keep everything alined to the main caps of the 8.8. the sleaves I'm having made are 6" total length. They will press into the housing 3" and go over the axle tubes 3". Then get welded after everything is strait.
I will also have made, two more end locators for 9" housing ends so Ill be able to install the big ford housing end bearings.
Hope this helps.
Oh, and I'll be using a hiltsy torque arm mount.

I can get a mustang 8.8 cheap, but to my understanding the hiltsy mount only fits explorer and ranger jousongs. Is anyone making a bracket to fit it? I have seen that some are just using mustang style torque arms i guess?

I've heard of using the mustang torque arm as well, but I don't have any knolageable info on that. I do have a mustang 8.8 at a shop but it will be a few days before I'm back out there to put my transmission back in. I'll check the fit of it then.

Awesome that would be much appreciated! If you could take a couple pics or note if it would be possible to use the hiltsy mount with the mustang rear without too many modifications it would help some of us out

the factory mustang rear suspension is a 4 link. maximum motorsports makes a torque arm setup to replace the 4 link setup due to traction issues with the stock suspension.
